WiFi or BLE for RPi 2040 aka Pico?

by ewr2san on Sat Feb 06, 2021 1:00 pm

AFAIK none of the RP2040 boards that come with WiFi or BLE built in are available yet... So what options are available to add BLE or WiFi to a Pico?

Since UART is not yet implemented in circutpython, can someone from adafruit confirm if the Adafruit Bluefruit LE SPI Friend - Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
PRODUCT ID: 2633 can be used (either with circutpython or micropython?) on a Pico?

Still no reply.. I figure that with 40+ people reading but not replying some of you have the same question but no one has tried working it out, or had success..

@adafruit_support_bill, @adafriut_support_mike, and others,
any chance you can ask up the chain on this one? Perhaps a blog post? The number one thing that is missing from the Pico is BLE or WiFi.. None of the TBD boards that Adafruit has announced:

Itsy Bitsy:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/4888

Feather:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/4884

Neither mentions BLE or WiFi.. So I assume that BLE or WiFi will be done by an add-on board via either the SPI or UART (with UART currently not supported in circutpython).

There are boards coming from other vendors with BLE integrated:
Arduino is integrating a u-blox NINA WiFi and Bluetooth module into their 2040 Nano form factor Pico:
https://blog.arduino.cc/2021/01/20/welc ... ntrollers/

Pimoroni is doing a "Pico Wireless" which will give the Raspberry Pi Pico Wi-Fi connectivity and a micro-SD slot via an Espressif ESP32 coprocessor:
https://www.hackster.io/news/pimoroni-l ... 847f3602b7

My hope is that you are taking on 2 solutions to the challenge..

The first is supporting some kind of add-on board for 2040 that brings BLE:
"Since UART is not yet implemented in circutpython, can someone from adafruit confirm if the Adafruit Bluefruit LE SPI Friend - Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
PRODUCT ID: 2633 can be used (either with circutpython or micropython?) on a Pico?

https://www.adafruit.com/product/2633
"

The second is a Feather based on 2040 with BLE built in (and hopefully wifi).

Now I get that you might not comment on the second one yet (too early).. But can someone talk about the first solution.. Is it feasible, does it work?, is it being worked on?

I did get this working with the following guide that was published after I posted this:
