Programming Arduino via Bluefruit LE Friends

by dan_arnett on Sun Mar 28, 2021 6:45 pm

I'm using the Bluefruit LE SPI Friend https://www.adafruit.com/product/2633 (or UART) in a project, connected to an Arduino. I'd like to be able to update the arduino's firmware over bluetooth. I can compile and save the .hex files to my phone, and I can connect my phone over bluetooth to the Bluefruit, but I'm unsure if it's possible to program the arduino's firmware over bluetooth. Here's a relevant project doing something similar, but with a different device and AT Command set https://www.instructables.com/Program-an-Arduino-Wireless-Over-Bluetooth/

Does anyone have suggestions for uploading firmware to an arduino, using a Bluefruit LE Friend?

Note: I'm not having issues updating the Bluefruit Firmware itself.

We do have a guide that covers programming Arduinos from phones using either a OTG (on the go) USB cable or EZ-link Bluefruit device.

I've found the easiest solution is to put a Raspberry Pi Zero permanently connected to the arduino and remotely login to the Pi via ssh. Then use arduino-cli and then compile / upload the code. This works with pretty much any controller board and isn't as hacky. You could of course use vnc and launch the Arduino IDE with this setup.
