nRF51822 Bluefruit recovery

by amehdi on Wed Mar 31, 2021 12:23 pm

Hello everyone.
I have a faulty Bluefruit device and I'd like to recover it.
This is the device: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2267
Here are the symptoms:
* When I connect it to a laptop, the blue CONN LED rapidly blinks.
* I only see garbage on serial (I've tried different baud rates and settings)
* Holding the DFU button while plugging the device, does not enter DFU mode.
* Holding the DFU button for 10 seconds does not do anything
* The iOS app "Bluefruit Connect" does not detect this dongle.

Is there a way I can recover this device or update its firmware? (I also have access to a j-link debugger)
Thanks

Is this a new board? Or did it develop that behavior after some time of normal use?

No, the device was working in the past.

Can you correlate the change in behavior to anything?

I'm afraid not. I have never done anything unusual with it.
It was sitting inside a drawer for some time and I wanted to so some sniffing today which didn't work.

Try this:

The LED flashing *may* be an indication it is stuck in DFU mode.

Thanks. I managed to de-brick it by writing the firmware using a j-link.
I used Adafruit_nRF51822_Flasher to write the firmware. Now the iOS app detects and connects to the Bluefruit board.

Cool. Yah, that'll work also. :) Good job! Not sure why it go in that state, but at least you have the ability to recover.
