Wifi control JUST with a cellphone?

by walshlg on Fri Sep 12, 2014 4:30 pm

Very intrigued by the idea of controlling a robot via cellphone. The question I have is can my android cellphone do this alone or must it be within another network?

I imagine the answer is complicated, I have Verizon and a non-jail braked galaxy note II as well as the note 10.1 tablet.

Hello walshlg, and welcome to the Adafruit forums!

Yes! No extra network really required.
There are a few options for you. The two clear ones being relatively simple. If you always have wifi available, then the Adafruit wifi breakout board would make your project simple (also would allow for remote-control from any distance, if needed, for as long as both you and the robot have an internet connection).

For those closer ranged projects, you might want to consider Adafruit's bluetooth breakout board. You have options depending on your project. Just search up the keywords "wifi" or "bluetooth" in the adafruit shop.

There are Bluethooth Terminal apps available free in the Google Play store for you to play with, should you select bluetooth!
