HUZZAH ESP8266 not working after reflash

by sgpdude on Fri May 08, 2015 6:49 pm

I had to reflash my device - it was in an infinite reboot loop and now it doesn't seem to work any more. It was reflashed with the utility in here https://github.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-flasher and it appeared to have been successfully done. However, I don't get any sort of response when I (tried to) connect to it with a terminal utility. I'm using an adafruit USB to FTDI cable that was working fine earlier. I know that the setup is working because I can connect fine to a second ESP8266 that I have.

Any idea what could have gone wrong?

if the red led is glowing faintly, its still in the bootloader, if you press reset and the LEDs blink its at least *trying* to run the code. maybe try resetting? make sure you're connecting at the right baud rate, etc? the bootloader is in 'hardware' so you can always reload :)

I finally got it resolved after reading what others in a similar situation had tried.

I reflashed the 8266 with AT FW and checked that it was responding and then flashed it to nodemcu. In general things were not very stable and I had to do this several times before it finally took. Also, the baud rates changed after AT FW flash so I also had to figure that one out.

Hopefully this will help someone with a similar problem out.

Your post was helpful.

Can you make it more so and provide details of how you flashed the updated AT firmware,

And also, what the various Baud rates were at various stages.

The details would be helpful.

Thanks,

John

It's been almost a month since I did this, but let me see if I can retrace the steps I took.

I used the application in this link to flash the AT FW.
http://www.xess.com/blog/esp8266-reflash/

I don't remember what the baud rate ended up being - I didn't save the link I read, but it wasn't difficult to figure out - just keep changing the baud rate in your terminal app until proper/readable text is shown.

Once that is done, I used the nodemcu firmware programmer to upgrade the FW to nodemcu.
https://github.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-flas ... 64/Release

The tricky part is that the reflashing process doesn't appear to be very robust. Sometimes the process would just stop. Others, it would appear to go thru but the reflashing failed. I just kept at it until it took. I must have tried at least 5 or 6 times before it finally succeeded.

Now, I use init.lua that starts the lua script that I want to run with a timer so that I don't have to deal with this problem.

I had to reflash a couple of ESP8266s and tried what I did before and it didn't work. What did work was using the ESP Flash download tool. http://bbs.espressif.com/download/file. ... e5fa03c226

This worked for me every time and for non-Adafruit ESP8266 devices as well.

Thank you for your post. Can you explain your steps and settings to reflash the HUZZAH with the ESP Flash tool?
