FONA feather hardware troubles

by jld on Thu Aug 03, 2017 2:26 am

Hi, I got FONA feather the other day and have been going through this tutorial.

My first pass through I got the FONA to output the sim CCID but then got stuck when checking the network registration only returned
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
Network status 0: Not registered

I tried a bunch of times, and could not get past that step.

Now, FONA is not returning the CCID either.

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
FONA> C
   ---> AT+CCID
   <--- ⸮
SIM CCID = ⸮

Any advice?

send pictures :) :D
i mean send pictures of fona setup (wires, board...).
Your sim card from fona is working in other devices?

Took another stab at it tonight, now this is all I get when uploading the Feather test.

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
FONA basic test
Initializing....(May take 3 seconds)
Attempting to open comm with ATs
        --> AT
   <---
 (lot of these, truncating for brevity...)
   ---> AT
   <---
Timeout: No response to AT... last ditch attempt.
   ---> AT
   <---
   ---> AT
   <---
   ---> AT
   <---
   ---> ATE0
   <---
   ---> ATE0
   <---
Couldn't find FONA

As for pictures, there's not much to see... I snapped on the antenna and plugged it into my computer. I've tried both with and without the battery connected.

1. other commands like battery check are ok? // edit: forget this point - seems to be "no"
2. #8 - used as the FONA TXD (data out from module to AVR). This pin is not exposed on the Feather
#9 - used as the FONA RXD (data out from AVR to module)

If you have other arduino or usb to serial adapter you could power up fona with and try to use serial pins directly from other arduino?

edit: pin8 not exposed.... need to think about it for a little longer

if you remove sim card does something change?

Thanks for your ideas. Still no luck after removing/reinserting sim card.

Any other ideas?

Did you modify FonaTest with these pin definitions?
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
#define FONA_RX  9
#define FONA_TX  8
#define FONA_RST 4
#define FONA_RI  7

Thank you, yes, that fixed my second issue, but now I'm back to the first.

When I boot my feather, the signal strength I get when I enter command 'i' is always 0. I've tried with two of the sticker antennas. One short and one longer.

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
FONA> i
   ---> AT+CSQ
   <--- +CSQ: 0,0
RSSI = 0: -115 dBm

And the network status I get back from command 'n' is cycles between

  • 'status 0: Not registered'
  • 'status 2: Not registered (searching)`
  • 'status 3: Denied'

When I put the sim in my iPhone 6s, I get 4 bars of service, and can make calls without any problem.

Additionally, in trying to troubleshoot the FONA is intermittently unable to be found, or, can be found, but then it can not get the CCID off of the sim card. The feather seems to be in a different state every time it boots it's hard to debug. Is my feather fona a lemon?

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
FONA> C
   ---> AT+CCID
   <--- ⸮
SIM CCID = ⸮

It's possible that you don't have any 2G service in your area. You would have to contact Ting about that.

This is more puzzling -
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
FONA> C
   ---> AT+CCID
   <--- ⸮
SIM CCID = ⸮

That looks like a baud rate issue. I don't understand why it would work sometimes and not other times.

We can try replacing the feather, but please check about 2G coverage first - no sense replacing it if it isn't going to work anyway. We would issue a refund instead.

I called Ting and they said that there should be good 2G coverage in my location.

I confirmed that I'm having this issue with the baud rate set to 115200 as the tutorial instructs. Is that right?

Thoughts on next steps?

Thanks for your help, I appreciate the support.

In several topics I found people claiming that in practice serial on sim800 series should be not faster than than 48k. Try with 4800 or similar (slow) clock

No. The tutorial tells you to open the *serial monitor* at 115200. The FONA operates at 4800

Hi Rick,

Any further advice? Still unable to get the feather connected to the network. Is there a better FONA board to use if I want voice connectivity?

It's possible that you have several independent issues, because I had a similar result with what's visible from your serial monitor with getting the information back.
In my case it was a simple "battery %" function (at+cbc). When I tested with standard fonatest from adafruit everything worked fine ('b'). When I used this function in my app I could not get a read'able result. As a result I ended up rewriting a whole function getbatterypercentage to a simple version going more or less like this:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
void getbatteryperc (*buffer){
//do simple copy from returnBuffer - dont remember the name now but you get the idea.
//I stopped using this getparsereply function
//and now i'm fine with the result - do not know what's wrong with getparseresult but it was not working correctly for my setup
}

I probably already asked - did you checked the sim card itself in other phone? Are you able to login to a network using a regular production device?

Yes, sim worked fine in my iPhone. Connected to Ting's network and had voice/data service.

When I try to get the network status on the feather, I only get:

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
RSSI = 0: -115 dBm
