FONA 3G SIMS

by dblucloud on Wed Feb 19, 2020 9:32 pm

Hi,

I am struggling to find compatible SIMS for https://www.adafruit.com/product/2687. THe Adafruit Fona 3G board. I have tried AT&T with no success (this is the recommended vendor) anybody have any luck getting this to work? The 2G board was great but of course that has been phased out in the U.S.A.

Thanks,

Dan

Ting still supports 2G in the US, and I think they also support 3G. I swap the same card between 2G and 3G FONAs when testing things, and they both work.

If you have a 2G card already activated, it will work for another couple months. I have a Feather Fona 32uf that requires a 2G card. Is there anyway to get this working? If not, is there a comparable FONA that I can use on a 4G LTE network? That is what Ting suggests.

None of our FONAs do 4G. As the radio protocols get newer, the process of getting certification becomes more time consuming, expensive, and heavily regulated.

The Ting website apparently no longer activates 2G SIMs, but you should be able to do so by talking to a rep in person. Tell them you're using the device for embedded purposes, and remote scientific equipment doesn't need to stream movies in Hi Def.

Datapoint: We have been using a 2G Feather in San Francisco since 2016 with a T-mobile SIM card. T-mobile states they will turn off 2G on Dec 31, 2020, but maybe that will be delayed.
We are looking for an LTE path but it is complicated. Verizon has a validated the SIM7500 on their network and there is this board that deltas from FONA library:
