What is the alternative to Fona since 2G/3G is sunsetting?

Post by alhamdliyesua »

Hello,

New here. Just wondering what the alternative for the Fona would be with 2G already dead and 3G soon to follow? Anyone used the SIM7600 modem or something else that uses 4G/5G?

Thanks in advance for your advice/experience.

Edit: I'm going to try out the Telit modem on sale from Sixfab. Looks like Skywire modem is not available at this time.

Since Adafruit decided not to make a FON4G, I went searching for something similar to my FONA3G and decided to try out the larger Waveshare SIM7600G board and am happy with it so far. Haven't done anything too complex with it yet, just the basic calling and texting. At some point want to also get the smaller 7600G board they make.

I think, waveshare's SIM7600CE 4G HAT for Raspberry Pi can be a good alternative.

Yep, just have to watch that the chip suffix (in your post "CE", or China), is appropriate for the region you're living in. I kinda went overboard and got the global version, ie "G".
