FONA 808 and Adafruit I/O GeoFencing project: Couldn't find

Post by rileystl »

Hi
I am a newbie to Arduino. The specific project I am trying to build is the FONA 808 Geo fencing project described here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/geofencing-w ... troduction

I started on this path 3 weeks ago, spending hours on the weekends. As a result, I now have a working Arduino IDE and have familiarized myself with basic tasks like uploading the code, understanding what libraries are needed, how to include those libraries, compiling, uploading the sketch and running the Serial monitor.

Coming from a java, non-hardware background. I have a basic understanding of the C++ code in the sketch and library files. That said, I have been testing the sketch gps_test.ino in the Arduino GeoFencing project (arduino-geofencing-master), but I did not get very far because I get the error: Couldn't find FONA

At one point in my testing, I gave up on gps_test and instead started afresh on the sketch FONAtest.ino with my FONA (SIM attached, antenna, battery, etc).

First, here is the result of my effort at putting together the hardware with all wiring, etc. At this point, I left out the LED , the buzzer, and the resistor, because leaving them out at this point, does not make a difference, I think.

I did my research on the internet to run the basic FONAtest, but I keep getting the error:
Timeout: No response to AT... last ditch attempt.
---> AT
<---
---> AT
<---
---> AT
<---
---> ATE0
<---
---> ATE0
<---
Couldn't find FONA

I think I have narrowed down where the problem is, at least in the code. It appears to be failing in the setup method in Fonatest, specifically in the line "fona.begin("fonalSerial")

Now, I have set up the GPRS APN to "wholesale" which is the apn provided to me by Ting. There is no username and password.

Code: Select all

if (! fona.begin(*fonaSerial)) {
    Serial.println(F("Couldn't find FONA"));
      while (1);
  }
I also post here the entire contents of my FONAtest, where the offending line of code appears.

Digging deeper, from "fona.begin..." in the sketch, I peeked into the library method begin() in Adafruit_fona.cpp. It appears to be failing in the while loop, and then doing the timeout, complaining that there is no response to AT.

Code: Select all

while (timeout > 0) {
    while (mySerial->available()) mySerial->read();
    if (sendCheckReply(F("AT"), ok_reply))
      break;
    while (mySerial->available()) mySerial->read();
    if (sendCheckReply(F("AT"), F("AT")))
      break;
    delay(500);
    timeout-=500;
  }

  if (timeout <= 0) {
#ifdef ADAFRUIT_FONA_DEBUG
    DEBUG_PRINTLN(F("Timeout: No response to AT... last ditch attempt."));

Code: Select all

I have also uploaded the sketch here that shows the connections I made so far. My FONA module is attached to a laptop by USB.

Any help in moving forward is appreciated. Thanks.

Did you fix the problem?

I wounder if your RX/TX is mounted correct between your Arduino and Fona?
Remember - RX go to TX and TX to RX

So it will be like this:
FONA TX to Arduino pin 3
RX to Arduino pin 2

Notice that the original RX/TX pin (0/1) on Arduino is not used

Hope you will succed. :-)

No, I have not.
RX go to TX, and TX to RX!
I thought I did that, but let me check that and update you. :)

Thank you.

It does appear that my RX/TX is mounted correctly between my Arduino and Fona.
But, I am confused by the statement "Remember - RX go to TX and TX to RX"
What did you mean by that? Sorry for my newbie questions.

Thanks again. :)

Think of it like a telephone. You talk into the mouthpiece, which goes to the earpiece of the person you are talking to.

call me stupid, but on your picture fona looks dead - not powered on. Blue led is not lit.
Second thing - your antennas are swapped.

I have got the FONA working since a week ago.
You are absolutely right. The FONA was dead, but I powered it on - I attached it to the USB port on my PC with a -mini USB- and also fixed the problem with swapped antennas.
Once I fixed both problems, it came alive and started responding to commands on the Serial monitor.

Thank you very much.
