Can't get fona to communicate with raspberry pi

by Abhireddy526 on Sun Aug 02, 2020 7:31 am

Hi I'm basically working on a project which requires an adafruit fona ufl version to communicate with the raspberry pi, the font is being powered with a 1200mah lithium ion battery. I have soldered rx on the fona to tx on the pi, tx on the fona to rx on the pi and vio on the fona to pin 1 (3.3v) on the pi. I've also installed minicom onto the raspberry pi and then I enter 'sudo minicom -D /dev/ttyAMA0 -b 9600' into the terminal. Then I get taken to a serial terminal which is perfect but then I can't type anything meaning I can't type AT and I can't get a response to tell me whether my fona is communicating properly with the raspberry pi or not. Does anybody know why this is happening, I have checked my connections properly by the way. Any help is appreciated thank you.

Hey, sorry for the delayed response.

Please post a photo of your setup showing how everything is connected so we can look for any obvious hardware issues.

You can resize it down. We don't need super hi res. 800x600 would be OK.

This is most likely some form of wiring or other connection issue.

Can you back up and make a more direct connection between the Fona and the Pi more like this guide:

Hi, thank you for the help, I have followed adafruit's fona setup and I've connected all the necessary wires, however I am unable to turn the fona on when I hold the key button for 2 seconds. None of the LEDs come on or flash at all. Do you know why this is happening, because obviously if it doesn't turn on I won't be able to connect it with the raspberry pi
Thank you

Have you reconnected with the simple and direct wiring shown in the guide linked? Or are you still wired per the more complex arrangement in your photos above?

I've reconnected with the simple wiring so just with raspberry pi and fona I've removed all the other parts.

This is still most likely a connection issue. Jumper wires, or a something like a cobbler breakout:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/2028
would be better than soldering directly to the Pi's header pins. The soldering in general looks like it might be cold and under soldered in various locations:

Okay, thank you very much. However, could you pleas explain to me how to use the cobbler breakout, so that I can connect it from my raspberry pi to to my fona. Thank you

Female/Female Jumper Wires:
https://www.adafruit.com/category/468
would allow you to connect between the male headers on the Pi and Fona. Soldering of the headers on the Fona must be good though.

The cobbler breakout could be used in conjunction with a breadboard:
https://www.adafruit.com/category/124
and male/male jumpers wires:
https://www.adafruit.com/category/471
to stage everything on the breadboard.
