Fona 800 Shield is destroying sim Cards

by jkf on Tue Dec 01, 2020 6:39 am

I had a Fona 800 Shield on a Mega running for 2 years in a project. Now it stopped to connect to the gsm Network.

As I tested the Sim card from the Fona Module in my cellphone, the card was not recognized by my phone.
Then I put the Sim, from my phone into the Fona module, as a result it destroyed that sim as well.

I ordered now replacements sims for my phone as well as for the Fona module from my provider, but I am not sure how to track down the error.
As a last Test I removed the Fona module from the Arduino Mega, put in an old and no longer needed Sim card and just connected the fona to the Lipo Bat. The result was another grilled simcard...

There are no visible mistakes on the fona board. Also it is answering AT commands, but of course it does not connects to the gsm network...

Anny suggestions how to go on with this?

Can you check the voltage on the sim card VCC pin?

I power it only from the 3.7V Lipo at the moment. If I do so I can not measure any voltage at the Vin Pin.

I think I misunderstood your Question. Now I also measured directly at the sim card socket. I can not detect any voltage between any of the pins (I tested all pins against all others).
I only did this without any SIM inserted.
Is there maybe a kind of SIM detected on the fona board, that only activates Vcc after detection?
Maybe it detects a wrong Simcard and supplies a to high voltage?

Who can help?
Can this be repaired, or do I have to buy a new fona module?
