WS2812b controller programming

by BurritoGG on Thu Apr 20, 2017 8:48 am

Hello,

im driving a WS2812b led strip with my raspberry pi 2 via the rp_ws281x library. (https://github.com/jgarff/rpi_ws281x)
Everything worked perfectly until one day i accidentally put the LED strip on 12V instead of 5V. (while running my animations)
While reading the chips datasheet i found that this controller is programmable on 12 volts.
Since then my strip is behaving weird on my regular code running on there, only some parts light up the colors are complete wrong and so on.
So i was searching the internet on how to reprogram that chip, but didnt find anything in that direction.
Can someone help me on how this is accomplished?

Thanks for your help in advance

PS: Im not quite sure for i am in the right section with that post so please move and forgive me :P

Where did you see 12V? The WS2812B datasheet lists 5.3V as the absolute max:

At "General Description":
"Also include a precision internal oscillator and a 12V voltage programmable constant current control part, effectively ensuring the pixel point light color height consistent."

Not sure what they're talking about there. Makes no sense to me. Could be a typo.

But 12V will fry these things. See the Absolute Maximum Ratings section.

Well thanks, do you think there is any way of finding out for this is a typo or not?

All I can think of is maybe you can contact the manufacturer and ask them about it. Not sure if I'd expect a response, though.
