Solved.
My original sketch had some code copied and pasted from a web site which used smart quotes.
These are known to cause a problem with the Arduino.
Even though I had removed the smart quotes the code it would not connect to adafruit.
After I re-typed the same(?) code into a new blank sketch and it executed correctly.
