Metro mini 328 and WINC1500 to connect to Adafruit.io?

by jtsliker on Thu Nov 29, 2018 4:56 pm

I would like to use an Adafruit Metro Mini 328 and an Adafruit ATWINC1500 breakout to connect to Adafruit.io. Has anyone been successful doing this? I have the Metro Mini and the ATWINC 1500 running and connecting the to internet and have added the Adafruit.io certificate but the Metro Mini to the compiler is an Arduino Uno and I cannot include the libraries required to connect to Adafruit.io. I have been using an Adafruit ESP8266 breakout with great success but I need more I/O than what is available on the ESP8266 breakout. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

How are you connecting them together and what libraries are you having trouble using?

I have the two connected using SPI and it does connect to the internet. I am using IDE 1.8.5. The Metro Mini is using the Arduino/Genuine Uno board. I cannot load the following libraries: "AdafruitIO_WiFi", AdafruitIO and AdafruitHttpClient. They don't show up in the Library Manager and therefore I cannot include them. These are the libraries that I used with the ESP8266 breakout to connect to AdafruitIO with great success. I also have included the following libraries: WiFi101, SPI, and Adafruit_MQTT which do load. Thanks.

It sounds like the libraries are corrupt as they should show up no matter what chip is selected. You might try going to GitHub and downloading and installing them again. Sometimes there are multiple libraries that need to be extracted and put in their own folder but that should be mentioned in the readme.

I downloaded and installed new libraries from GitHub, and ensured they are in the right place but to no avail. In digging deeper with several searches it looks like the Arduino Uno and those libraries are not compatible. Here is the statement from Adafruit on the hardware that is compatible with Adafruit IO libraries: The Adafruit IO Arduino Libraries can connect with Adafruit IO using Arduino. You can connect your projects using a connected-interface of your choosing: WiFi (ESP8266, ESP82, WINC1500, and WICED), Ethernet, or Cellular.

It looks like plan B time. Use the Metro Mini to monitor the hardware I/O devices and send that information to an ESP8266 breakout which will then communicate with Adafruit IO.

I got pretty dirty digging to find this out but at least I know now. Thanks for your help.

What program are you trying to run? and do you have the Adafruit_IO_Arduino library installed? That is where these .h files reside (except for HTTPclient, I can't find that there).

The Adafruit_IO_Arduino library is installed and the necessary "h" files are in that library. There is a forum post from April with the same problem and your reply was that code won't work with the Uno. I'm pretty sure that's the correct answer.

I don' see much point in beating this dead horse anymore. Thanks for your help.

You are right, it does not seem to run with the Uno.
