LoRa Gateway Project Kit

by patstevenson on Tue Dec 11, 2018 6:04 pm

Hi, I was wondering if Adafruit could create a developer's kit for a LoRa Gateway. I have seen some with Seeedino Studio and others, but I really would like Adafruit to put together one with a multichannel concentrator, RPi or Arduino microcontroller and server. Thanks.

Hi

I have built an RPI Telemetry only field gateway which I use for school based educational projects.

Intentionally kept simple so it is easy for students to connect new devices & sensors.

The field gateway supports 433MHz, 868MHz & 915MHz devices and I have tested it with Dragino, Elecrow, Electronic Tricks, and Uputronics shields.

I'm building out more functionality as time allows (I also have an AdaFruit.IO nRF24L01P telemetry field gateway and Microsoft Azure IoT hub field gateways as well)

I have roughly a dozen different demo clients *duino, Adafruit Feather, Dragino LoRa Min dev, Wisen Talk2 LoRa, SparkFun RF Pro LoRa, Moteino, Arduino MKR 13000 etc.

Next round of dev is either OTA crypto, or provisioning.

Bryn,
Thanks so much for your reply. I actually found your projects earlier and read through them. They are remarkable and perfect for the kids to learn from. A great teacher and you're doing a great job for our workers of tomorrow. A couple of things about my particular Use Case though might still be a hindrance to getting a gateway setup to evaluate. First, I noticed that I probably sent this post to the wrong forum. I didn't understand that Adafruit.io was a test cloud for folks to try LoRa projects on. I can only consider a private network for my project, not one connected to cloud, Internet, etc. Second, because its private, I can't do any account creation or registration of components that are used. Third, I can't use any Microsoft stuff like IoT Core because of licensing. Fourth, the gateway shield hat for RPi is only one channel and it comes from outside the US. I can only consider components from within the US.

I know this may sound pretty much griping and complaining, but unfortunately I have many limitations due to our customers we serve, even for a proof of concept. I do appreciate the lessons you have posted and will continue to read through your projects. I was just hoping that Adafruit might come up with something. Thanks again for your post.

this is the gateway we recommend, it works *really well* and has a software backend!

Yes, I have looked at this gateway, however the instructions for setting up this gateway require you to register the gateway's ID with TTN. I can't do any kind of registration for the private network I'm setting up. I don't know whether this gateway can function without registration as it seems you have to provision devices to be able to attach to the gateway. All this setting up seems to need the Internet and accounts. I cannot do that for my situation. Also, I need to be able to put a gateway together as a kit of components, not a finished product. I'm sorry, but I just wanted to see if Adafruit could create a kit.

we don't have anything else that could be a gateway at this time!

Hi

The list of requirements really limits options about the only USA made RPI boards I have encountered (there maybe other) come from

https://lowpowerlab.com/

The are still single channel but most of the HopeRF, Rak, Semtech based gateway modules are designed/built overseas.
