How to handle missing or intermittent WiFi?

by millercommamatt on Thu Oct 17, 2019 11:38 am

I'm using Adafruit IO with a Huzzah ESP32 Feather. I'm looking for guidance on how to handle missing or intermittent WiFi gracefully. I don't want the microcontroller to get hung up trying to connect and not also log my sensor data to SD card.

Are there any worked examples of this out there or is there guidance in the Adafruit IO docs somewhere?

Hi millercommamatt,

Are you using Arduino or CircuitPython? If you're using Arduino - which libraries are you using?

Arduino

For Adafruit IO: AdafruitIO_WiFi

For everything else, a laundry list of still to support an Adalogger feather wing and a OLED display. I'm also reading two analog sensors.

If you're looking for info about powering the Huzzah ESP32 Feather, read this: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-huz ... management

Also, you have appeared to ask a way off topic question. Start your own thread for that sort of thing.

I'm still looking for some tips and best practices for handling this.

AdafruitIO_WiFi? Is this the Adafruit IO Arduino library?

Do you have an example of how the library behaves with missing or intermittent WiFi, such as output from the serial monitor? I haven't performed a lot of testing with disconnecting the ESP from an access point, this is something I'm interested in adding..

I've been using the Adafruit_IO library. AdafruitIO_WiFi.h is the include statement per the examples I've been basing my code on.

I've not performed any testing to date in a poor WiFi environment. I know I'm going to want to deploy the data logger I'm building in an environment where the WiFi might go out and I don't currently know how to handle that. All the worked examples I've found will pretty much hang if it can't connect to IO. I need my logging to proceed on pace no matter what. I'm writing data to SD as well as sending it to IO.
