HELP ! looping MQTT ERROR: error saving data disabled feeds

by jimk123 on Mon Dec 02, 2019 4:49 pm

I deployed a FONA solution in a remote location and it was working for about two weeks collecting wind data and today it stopped publishing valid data (I would post new readings every 30 seconds of wind speed and direction) I found a bug in my code where an invalid wind reading would publish a error code to a feed called 'winderr' but that is outside my 30 second publishing loop, my fault :( The device is over a 100 miles away and I will not be able to get to it for a few days so it is trying to post every second or so because it is getting invalid wind readings causing throttling.

I have various other devices running and not sure if the throttling is against just the wind device or all my devices trying to publish?
Feeds: 23 of โˆž
Dashboards: 3 of โˆž
Rate: 60 / minute
Current Usage: 52 / min

I thought I could just delete the feed 'winderr' but it just re-creates it again within a second or two. Then I tried to disable the feed but now it is flooding my IO web console with a pop up message every second:

"MQTT ERROR: error saving data on xxxxx/feeds/boat.winderror, boat.winderror has been disabled, disabled feeds may not receive new data (hide)"

any suggestions how to disable or delete the feed with out all the pop ups until I can drive to the location and re-program it ?
thanks

Wow, talk about deployment! Congrats on getting it working for two weeks. You may want to look into figuring out how to do an OTA firmware deployment (may need to switch to a platform like Particle - which works with IO) so you can remotely update your code.

Rate: 60 / minute
Current Usage: 52 / min

Your usage looks ok, it's not hitting the rate of 60/minute.

I thought I could just delete the feed 'winderr' but it just re-creates it again within a second or two.

If you're using Adafruit IO Arduino, this would be the case as AIOA automatically creates new feeds.

Then I tried to disable the feed but now it is flooding my IO web console with a pop up message every second:
"MQTT ERROR: error saving data on xxxxx/feeds/boat.winderror, boat.winderror has been disabled, disabled feeds may not receive new data (hide)"
any suggestions how to disable or delete the feed with out all the pop ups until I can drive to the location and re-program it ?
thanks

Unfortunately, no. Prior to disabling a feed, you should've received the message:
Disabled feeds are permanently locked from editing, cannot receive any new data, and will not be included in full account downloads. Existing data may be downloaded from the feed's page.
Once a feed has been disabled, it may not be reactivated.

However, you should be able to delete a disabled feed, though, from your feeds page (io.adafruit.com/feeds)

Thanks for the quick reply. I live in the Northeast and we had a major snowstorm, but today I drove down to the boat and updated the code to fix the my software bug. Thanks for the info on particle and I will check it out. I recently discovered Adafruit IO, it is a great service ! I see your name a lot on the forums, you folks do a great job supporting this platform !

It took a little while to find the right combination code that worked with FONA and the Mega board (I use hardware serial and the topic here I used two sets of hardware serial pins, one for FONA and the second one for the wind sensor a NMEA 0183 device)

I have deployed three different solutions so far using Mega and FONA and two using feather esp8266 and most of been running several weeks without a glitch.

is the throttle PER feed or the sum of all the feeds ? I have a few more boards/feeds I would like to deploy but if it is a sum of all the feeds I may quickly run out capacity? Can I extend my subscription to get more bandwidth or do I need to purchase another subscription?
Thanks

Hi jimk123,

If you are already on IO+, you can upgrade just your data rate by finding the "Change your IO+ plan" link under "Manage your subscription" on your billing page while you're signed in. You'll need to add a credit card to your account if you signed up with a 1 Year Pass code.

The data rate is shared across all feeds and it's $2 per month to add 10 points / minute to your rate limit. You can only make a few changes to your subscription per day, but if you only need the upgrade for a short time you can turn it on, get your work done, turn it off, and only be charged for the portion of the month you used it. It's not quite metered billing, but should help you here.
