Indeed, that is a good test. I was doing similar things to no avail.

I used Brent's example code, and this is the serial output that I get:

I had boot mode 3,6 and 3,7 errors getting TI117 and BME 280s working. In one case that was a wrong pin assignment for a Due. I'm going to double-check that I have the right board selected.

More interesting data:

For funsies, I changed Brent's example script to connect to my tethered phone, to get a different IP. It connected, and fed data into the IO Monitor.

I thought maybe my IP had been blocked, since I saw some news about that. However, on the same network, I used an example AdafruitIO Python script (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_IO ... _pubsub.py) and it published to my feeds just fine.

I'm scratching my head over here...

@proecogreen: did it just start working, or did you do something?

I tried the test program with interesting results. Basically, it does not work on a Feather Huzzah or a NodeMCU. Both connect to my WiFi and get IP addresses just fine.

However, in one case on the NodeMCU, after about an hour, it started publishing. I restarted it, and it failed as before and it was still failing after 8 hours.

Assuming I/we get things running correctly again, what is the plan to prevent a repeat in two years when the current certificate expires? Is there a way to do it with zero interruption?

@John87: I also updated the Arduino IDE along with Adafriut IO, Adafruit MQTT and ArduinoHTTP libraries to the Latest version!

I'm still trying to figure out why my ESP8266 can't run the test script, but my computer can publish to IO. Changing only the WiFi AP in my ESP8266 ino file lets me publish again, which makes no sense.

@proecogreen, I have tried a new computer programing a NodeMCU with a fresh ide 1.8.13, the new library and whatever it needs, and an older setup (1.8.12) with updated library. This one is programing a Feather Huzzah.

In the most simple terms, neither works. Both will usually connect after failing for 15 minutes to 2 hours but sometimes are still failing after 8 hours.

Before the upgraded library, connecting to Adafruit was always the least of my problems.

Brent,

Is it possible that specific hosts could be banned from IO or anything? I have no outbound firewall rules on my network, and with Wireshark, I see the ESP8266 connecting to io.adafruit.com, but it doesn't succeed.

As another test, I setup a mini-travel router behind my main router, but had it use a VPN client, and my ESP8266 chip returns data to IO. I can't seem to figure out why it won't do it from my home network.

I just set up an ESP8266, updated the BSP and libraries, and was able to connect to Adafruit IO and pub/sub data. I'm going to leave this running as a soak test to see if anything abnormal pops up.

Are you able to connect using MQTT (not secure MQTTS)?

Could you try running this sketch? https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_MQ ... sp8266.ino

Mine works too, on any wifi except my own :(

I'll have to try the non-secure version later. What is BSP?

John

I tried the new example and it's the same: WDT resets, connects to WiFi quickly, may or may not connect to the server.

BSP is board support package. If you navigate to Tools->Board Manager, and type ESP8266, you should be able to view the current board support package version.

I tried the new example and it's the same: WDT resets, connects to WiFi quickly, may or may not connect to the server.

Ok, this type of exception with the ESP are difficult for me to debug from my end. I'll need some assistance from you since I can not reproduce this bug.

Can you install the EspExceptionDecoder plugin:
https://github.com/me-no-dev/EspExcepti ... stallation

When you get the WDT reset and stack dump exception, open tools->esp exception decoder, and paste the stack trace into the windows pane. (https://github.com/me-no-dev/EspExceptionDecoder#usage)

Then, copy and paste the results from the bottom pane into this thread so I can analyze the issue better.
