Defective LoRaWAN gateway (TTIG)

by aromring on Tue Nov 17, 2020 12:24 am

Just few days ago I bought from you the much needed item: "The Things Indoor LoRaWAN WiFi Gateway 900 MHz" (PID: 4345). I am afraid the item you sold me is defective.

First, let me answer the obvious questions:
1) Yes, I successfully set the gateway up, it does connect to my wireless router, I can see it on the Attached Devices list, and it answers to pings on my LAN.
2) Yes, I did register it with The Things Network. Yes, the Gateway ID is correct, the frequency plan is correct, the TTN router is correct and I have pictures to prove it (available to Adafruit personnel).

Second, the symptoms (video available to Adafruit personnel):
1) Right after plugging the gateway the green LED flashes at 1 Hz indicating connection attempt to the wireless router. It succeeds in that because the LED flashes change to alternating green and orange colors - this indicates connection attempt to the TTN server. However, this step is not successful and the LED starts flashing green at 4 Hz frequency.

You may rightfully ask "How is it our fault? It's a network problem!" Well, the attached screenshot shows why: One of the TTN users came up with a clever way of diagnosing the problem via a curl command. I repeated the test on my Mac and got the same result: "Not provisioned". This is interpreted as "vendor forgot to unlock the device". In my case vendor is Adafuit... Please advise on what to do next.

I also recently purchased a TTIG from Adafruit, saw the same problem you're seeing, and eventually arrived at the same conclusion.

My forum posts on The Things Network have not generated any replies about what other steps can be taken to debug this.

I too am in the same situation with a gateway I just recently received from Adafruit. It connects to my WiFi network (as I verified through my WiFi router), but it does the 4 Hz green flash indicating radio or network problems. I have successfully provisioned a few other LoRaWAN gateways on my network (including another Things Indoor gateway). A fix would be preferable to returning the gateway. Thanks to the rest of you for all your detailed documentation of the problem.

Could you please link the posts to the TTN forum?

btw we dont touch these gateways, they come sealed directly from TTN - hopefully we can either remotely provision them or get replacements! we'll get all the info and figure out asolution!

I also get the "Not Provisioned" response to the curl command posted previously in this thread.

Hi all, am Rish here from TTN team looking into this issue. Will post an update shortly.

Update - these gateways have been configured to TTN earlier this morning. Can you power cycle the gateway and try again? In case it doesn't work, please drop me a line hardware[at]thethingsindustries.com and I'll help you out.

Hi Rish,
Whatever you did seems to have worked. I'm getting a solid green LED and the gateway status has updated to "Connected" in the TTN console.

Hey, solid green LED for me, too! And the TTN console shows "connected". :) :)
Rish, thank you, but please do tell us: What did you do to fix this? So that we know how to fix this in the future...
