ESP won't connect after board update

by Jenni722 on Wed Feb 24, 2021 1:38 am

I'm having an issue with my ESP32 boards not connecting to AIO after installing a board update to ver 1.0.5. Immediately after the update, a WIP system wouldn't communicate w/AIO after a minor program change was built and uploaded. Reverting the change had no effect, and changing back to board version 1.0.4 causes the program to fail to build.

Another ESP32 micro (different program, TFT touch screen) that was actively being developed on over the last few days now fails to connect.

A board with a program / board version from a few days ago connects just fine.

This is with Arduino IDE and through VS Pro and vMicro builds. Thoughts?

To clarify - is the ESP32 is using board support package v1.0.5?

Are you seeing any specific errors?

Which libraries are you using? Version?

What operating system are you using? Version?

Adafruit IO is 4.0.2, and the ESP32 board is set to "Adafruit ESP32 Feather".

The board, "esp32", version was 1.0.4 and after updating to 1.0.5 the boot setup function sits and is waiting to connect to AIO.

I also tried the 1.0.5 rc7 board version. It all builds/connects when using a PC building against board 1.0.4, and built/ran on my other machines before updating to 1.0.5.

One board is using AIO 4.0.2, RTClib 1.12.5, SPI 1.0, DallasTemperature 3.9.0, and Onewire 2.3.5 libraries, and the other is using SPI, ADafruit GFX 1.10.6, HX8357 1.1.10, and STMPE610 1.1.2. Both projects show the same issue with AIO on the two machines with updated board versions. Other projects build and run on the system still at 1.0.4.

Win 10 Pro ver 20H2. Insider Builds (beta channel) on most machines. OS Build 19042.844 and Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3030.0.

Visual Studio Pro 2019 v16.9.0 Preview 4 and vMicro, and also the same AIO issue with Arduino IDE v1.8.13.

No specific errors, I just have the little "." that appears. Usually, I see just one and it connects, but this goes on forever.

I went through the RC versions of the ESP32 boards, and version 1.0.5-rc4 works and 1.05-rc5 through rc7 do not work with AIO.

This seems to match what another user saw here (viewtopic.php?f=56&t=175113). I'm going to wait for Espressif to do a full release (non-release-candidate) of the board support package before diving in.
