hiya from what we can tell, it may be the silabs VCP drivers are broken under mac 10.12.6 right now. which we've asked silabs about, but they have not replied yet. this only started happening 3 days ago...

can you try installing v4
https://www.silabs.com/products/develop ... cp-drivers
you may need to install twice and/or reboot in between
please try it and let us know!

I have been struggling with the can't upload problem for two days. I have read (and tried) resistors, jumpers, reinstalling software, upgrading software, different computer (macs), different cables, another feather huzzah, etc. Started researching and learning about the esptool.

Was pretty sure it was the port software, this line kept showing up "warning: espcomm_send_command: didn't receive command response".

Log on tonight, start browsing forums for clues and found a thread in another forum about the Metro board and the newest VCP drivers not compatible. Was just about to try it when I found read this updated thread.

I just downgraded to the legacy version of the VCP drivers and SUCCESS! I have uploaded the blink program.

Was directed here from a different thread with a similar problem and yep, installing the Legacy drivers above worked for me as well, thank you! Only difference for me was I had to run the uninstall.sh that was bundled with it first.

I have tried uninstalling and installing the drivers from the referenced Legacy Installer Mac_OSX_VCP_Driver_10_6.zip
No luck.
However that esptool.py mentioned in the blog post https://hpclab.blogspot.com/2015/06/esp8266-arduino-ide-on-mac-os-x.html works GREAT
note that I installed esptool using "pip install esptool" and magically didnt have to edit the esp8266 platform.txt file.

ok.. onward into the dust!

I can confirm that the old drivers worked.

Steps:
1. Download old firmware linked here: http://community.silabs.com/t5/Interface-Knowledge-Base/Legacy-OS-Software-and-Driver-Packages/ta-p/182585
2. Run the uninstall that was included with that download.
3. Install the drivers in that package.
4. Reboot.
5. Flash with Arduino IDE (using the default esptool.)

Thanks for getting this resolved. Must be super annoying when one of your parts suppliers decides to break their drivers out of nowhere like this.
