128X64 OLED featherwing display very dim

Post by Apogeemike82 »

Hello,
I got my new feather wing 128X64 featherwing connected and working on example code last night and the display looked awesome. great contrast very easy to read; however, this morning I plug it back into the computer and the display has gone very dim. It is unreadable even 100mm distance in a dimly lit room. I had the featherwing plugged into a M4 CAN feather and an M0 adalogger. The display is very dim on both boards. Is there a way of changing the brightness?

I have replied with a photo so to show you what the screen currently looks like. It is still getting worse even though nothing has changed. If anyone has any ideas on what I can do to fix this it would be greatly appreciated.

Try touching up the soldering on the pins:

Maybe it's getting marginal power due to an under soldered pin? Worth trying at least to see if it helps.

Thanks for your assistance. I have resoldered the pins to the best of my ability. This looks good to me. Unfortunately though it hasn’t made any improvement to the screen brightness.the photo attached is with the screen actually turned on. Is there anything else I should try?

Thanks. That looks much better. Nicely done!

Which Feather main board are you currently using and how is everything stacked up and connected? It looks like you are on a breadboard. So is it like? [breadboard][feather with stacking headers][featherwing oled] ?

G'day the featherwing OLED is currently sitting on the M4 CAN feather which has been soldered with staking pins as per the attached photos.

That all looks fine.

It sounds like it was originally working OK, then stopped working:
connected and working on example code last night and the display looked awesome. great contrast very easy to read; however, this morning I plug it back into the computer and the display has gone very dim.
Can you correlate that to anything? Was it left unpowered overnight? Etc?

No sorry I am unable to correlate with anything. It was working the night before and disconnected it once finished. The next the morning I connected it and could barely see the graphics.

thats quite odd, usually its a contrast setting. what if you totally disconnect the feather form power. wait a bit, then re-upload the sketch?

Hello, I had the feather disconnected from power for a few days and tried to reload the sketch. It's still very dim. In fact I think it is getting worse. It is also very dim on my M0 feather I think the problem must be with the featherwing components.

Hey @Apogeemike82 - Just wondering if the replacement worked, and has continued to work, OK? This is a weird issue and want to rule out the potential it might be software related. So knowing how things worked with your setup will help. Thanks!
