Music Maker w/ Amp: possible to bypass the amp?

Post by guidow »

I was going to upcycle an iHome to make an effects box for a stage prop with the amped version. Speakers are just not loud enough so going with powered speakers. I'm pretty sure I shouldn't wire the amped version into the 3.5 jack of the powered speakers (if I can then great).
Can I bypass the amp somehow or just bite the bullet and buy the unamped version?

The shield version has a Line Out jack in addition to the speaker terminals. There was not enough room for that on the Feather version.

The Class-D amplifier outputs are only suitable for directly driving a speaker load. They are not usable as inputs to another amp.

Bypassing the amp would be tricky since there are no breakouts and the amp chip is a surface mount component. If you have access to a hot-air rework station you could possibly de-solder the chip to get at the solder pads.

I'd probably bite the bullet and get the un-amped version.
