ESPHole Ad Blocker not connecting to my wifi network

Post by samlane86 »

Hey! I've been trying to set up the ESPHole Adblocker using these instructions: https://learn.adafruit.com/esphole-ad-b ... he-esphole. For a while it wasn't even recognizing my network name let alone connecting. I finally got it to see my network but it still won't connect. The screen just keeps displaying "Conn'ing to..." with my network name, but it never actually connects. Does anyone know what I might have missed?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Sam,

How far are you from the WiFi router?

Which version of CircuitPython did you install?

Have you tried the factory reset and bootloader update? v0.9.2 is the current bootloader release.

Hey Mikeysklar!

Thank you very much for the response! I was only one room away from my router (maybe 25-30 feet) so I would hope that’s not the issue.

But I might indeed have an outdated version of Circuit Python. I think the link in the guide I followed was for 7.3.0. I’ll try the updated one you provided and see what happens!

Thanks again!

@Mikeysklar, where can I find version 09.2 that you referenced. This is the link I was using and I'm only seeing 7.3 and 8.0 listed.

It sounds like you are looking at CircuitPython versions which are 7.3.0 (stable) and 8.0.0-alpha.1 (unstable).

The bootloader is on the bottom right corner of this page v0.9.2 with installation instructions.

the guide doesnt use circuitpython for the code - being closer to the router will probably help, also of course make sure its 2.4ghz not 5ghz

Ahhh thank you! Apologies for the oversight. Now I'm having problems with the ESP Web Flasher site. It asks to connect to the serial or com port, but all of the options result in connection failed. Do you know what I could be doing wrong here? Sorry for the multitude of questions, I'm new to these sorts of things.

How close should it be to the router? I tried programming it with both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz and neither seemed to work.

Ideally you would be less than within 150 feet from the AP.

With WiFi every-day 802.11g or n, you can get about 150 feet / 46 meters. Outside, about 300 feet / 92 meters. But as you are probably aware, the further you get from the access point, the flakier the connection will get and the more power you will need to amplify.
