MakeCode: where does console output go?

by flounder on Fri Jan 26, 2018 12:48 am

I have tried all kinds of searches for how to see the console output in MakeCode, and have discovered nothing. How do I see console output? I am using Mac OS X ("El Capitan").

Here's what should have been a trivial example that should have worked "out of the box", but I get no output

Unfortunately, as far as we can tell, there is no USB serial output for CPX in MakeCode. console.log() works in the simulator, but it doesn't output anything on a real CPX. There is no USB serial device that shows up when you plug in a CPX running a MakeCode program.

micro:bit has blocks that do "serial" input and output, but those are not implemented for CPX.

Adafruit is not doing MakeCode development itself, so you might try bringing this up with the MakeCode people.

Where does the console output appear in the simulator?

My copy does not have a "Show console" button as shown in https://makecode.com/blog/adafruit-circ ... s/v0.20.13 and pictured - https://www.screencast.com/t/bPP8nIOXzd

It would be useful to have a list of things that do not work in MakeCode. It would preclude fruitless searches. It would also be useful to have a pointer to the appropriate people a Microsoft.

That's odd. What URL are you using, and which version of which browser ? I'm using https://makecode.adafruit.com/#editor on the latest Chrome.

Try creating a simple new program from scratch that includes console logging. It's possible there's some versioning issue with an old program.

By experimentation, I see that the "Show Console" button does not appear if there aren't any console blocks in the program.

I agree. But if you would like to try contacting some folks, see https://makecode.com/contact. Note the link there is wrong, should be: https://github.com/Microsoft/pxt. [EDIT: link now fixed]

For the first time using console, I had to add a button press (e.g., On button press A, send 1) and then a "On infrared receive (num)" console log "A". Then, I had to push buttons on each of the two circuit playgrounds that showed up, scroll down in the simulator, and then I saw the "Show Console."

But I too am looking how to view the serial port data. I'm thinking maybe we write a general reader in circuit python.

You can access the device console while the USB cord is connected, using the MakeCode native Windows app, rather than the web app.

Alas, I use a MacBook. I did this after wasting a month trying to get drivers loaded in Windows 7 or 8.1. I now use the Macbook for all my development work for microcontrollers. The chances that Microsoft will support a MacBook are probably expressible as ten-to-the-minus-two-digits.
