CP Developer edition

by vnbeblow on Tue Mar 27, 2018 12:39 pm

Hey all,

I have a CP express that works exactly like it should. Plug in to Surface, check Clayboot, download code and off we go.
My Head office sent me 2 extra ones (as I requested for presentations) but I'm unable to do anything with them. When I plug into computer it dings, then a rainbow circles the CP. No Clayboot comes up and when I try to download code it says device not found. The one difference that I've noticed is that this CP is a Developer edition.

Is there any way to reset or Flash it to make it able to download code?

Could it be that the other 2 are CircuitPlayground Classics? Look at the silk screen on the back. Do you see "Express"?

ATmega32U4 @8mhz

That's a Classic (PID 3000). The Express version (PID 3333) is based on the ATSAMD21 M0.

Some of the early versions of the Classic were labeled as Developer Editions. More info:

okay, so the chipset is ATmega32U4 "Older Circuit Playground Classics didn't have the word Classic on the back, but they do have text that says the chip type, ATmega32U4"

is there a link on how I can code it? Do I go to code.org?

Yep. The guide covers how to setup and program with Arduino:

If you want to use with code.org, you'll need to install Firmata on the board:

I've gone into the Arduino ide and done the a)tools->port->upload. Rainbow leds have stopped blinking.
but it's not showing up on File explorer list (it is in settings)
With this developer Adafruit will i be able to program it in the Windows 10 MakeCode for Adafruit?
I want to be able to use this with k-6 so for now keep them away from the Javascript

You need a Circuit Playground Express to use MakeCode.

I think maybe there is some confusion with the product names. Basically, there are only two boards - Circuit Playground Classic and Circuit Playground Express. The "classic" came out first and used to be the only one and at that time it was labeled "Developer Edition". The "express" came out next and also was labeled as a "Developer Edition" (and currently still is). When the CP Express came out the original CP was referred to as "classic" and the "developer" moniker was removed.

That's what's being described here:

Okay, good to know. So the Classic only works with JavaScript in Arduino Ide?

I have 4 expresses that I'll be using with Grade 1's. The classics are just a little too technical.

Any chance I can exchange 2 classics for 2 expresses with you guys?

Correct, but the Arduino IDE uses a flavor of C++. Although firmata is also supported (but sounds like not what you want maybe).

Yep, it was one of the goals of the Express to provide programming options that are simpler (compared to Arduino). This effort is ongoing.

Don't know, but I can ask.

Thanks for the prompt response. Yeah the express partnered with MakeCode (plus the tutorials) is awesome and dead easy.

If you could ask that would be appreciated. Not too sure what I'll do with them otherwise.

I've been repping your product to Principals up here in Canada and have moved sales your way. Such a cheaper option than a $400 Dash and dot (although I love those guys)
Thanks for all your help!

Asked, but we currently don't offer hardware exchanges like this. Sorry if things were confusing with the two products.

I guess if you wanted to, you could always mail me a couple of demo express units. ;)
