CPX not working

Post by brandontclee »

Hi Hi!

I purchased 12 Circuit Playground Expresses for my classroom a couple months ago We took them out this month to use. About half of them work fine, and the other half have the same issue.
- When plugged in, only the "on" light turns on
- when the reset button is pressed, nothing happens
- various power sources and cables have been tried
- They are not connected to the crickit

I have attached a picture that shows what they look like. All 7 are plugged into different power sources. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Are you using the same computer / USB cable / USB port etc. from one the CPX's that does work? (to rule out cable / port / operating system issues).

When you plug in one of the problematic ones, does the computer do anything? Make a "new hardware attached" noise, or anything?
- when the reset button is pressed, nothing happens
Try double pressing reset also.
- They are not connected to the crickit
Were they at some point?

1) The computer does nothing. Also, in the image, some are plugged into macbooks and the others into chromebooks over 4 different usb ports

2) I've tried double pressing reset. No change. Can upload a video if needed.

3) Some were. Some weren't.

Sounds like there was previous use here. These are not freshly delivered boards, correct? Can you elaborate on what these boards have been used for up to this point?

Pretty basic stuff. My students used them just as they were. Plugged into the computer for power and coded using makecode. We made basic LED patterns, tried using the sensors a bit, but nothing really crazy. We had two die within the first few days and I assumed those were bunk. But then they all started to drop and I became concerned.

We are now using CRICKITS with the ones that survived and those are holding up fine.

Is it possible the power pads got shorted, or some other in correct wiring connection on the pads? Or were they just using the on board sensors?

We haven't even started using the pads. Literally all we did was like, turn a light on when you clap and make a loud noise when it shakes.

Can you check what version of MakeCode you were running. If possible, a screen shot of the info would help. You can find out by clicking the gear icon and then About...

Thanks.

Thanks for the info. This looks different than an ongoing issue we do know about the MakeCode and servo usage. They worked, and then didn't. It's possible the students are doing things and exactly what isn't being captured. We can replace them, but please keep an eye on how they are used, so if it happens again it can hopefully be correlated to something.

Send an email to [email protected] with a link to this thread and your order number and they can get you replacement CPXs (PID 3333).
