how does mAH work?

by Aman1 on Sat Mar 28, 2020 1:10 am

I have the 3.7V 500mAH LiPo battery. I attached it to the PowerBoost 500 to increase the voltage to 5V. What will that do to the amperage?
My current draw is 700 mA, so that should last for at least 40 mins but this lasted for about 10 mins. I think it has something to do with how the powerboost increases voltage and decreases how long the battery lasts, but I thought the powerboost had it's own power source so that wouldn't make sense. Does this possibly also have something to do with how many Watt hours the battery can last?

Power is volts times amps. And since the laws of physics don't permit power to be created from nothing, any increase in voltage requires a proportional decrease in current.

So in theory, going from 3.7v to 5v, 700mA output would require about 946mA input. But, since the process is not 100% efficient, there is some additional power lost as heat.
