by soky157 on Wed Apr 15, 2020 5:09 pm

Hi, I have a drive called CPLAYBOOT but no Circuitpy, Following the getting started insrtuctions i downloaded uf205.20, directions said to unzip it and move it to cplayboot drive. it is not unzippable, When clicked it opens up Makecode? very confused. I would sincerely appreciate help with this.

If you want to use CircuitPython, go to https://circuitpython.org/downloads/ and download the 5.2.0 UF2 appropriate for your board. You should also download the 5.x library bundle from https://circuitpython.org/libraries. The libarary bundle is a zip that should be unzipped. In the resulting lib subdirectory will be the libraries that can be copied as required to CIRCUITPY/lib.

The UF2 should be copied to the CPLAYBOOT drive. When that copy finishes, the board shoudl restart and the CIRCUITPY drive should mount.

Thank you very much for your help, I have followed the instructions you gave still have the same problem. How do I tell what version my Circuit Playground Express board is? I have been using CPX ver 5.20 as well. I have spent hours with this board following Adafruit instructions and am still stuck. Would I be better off deleting everything and starting new? Is there a bettery way to go that Circuit Python?
I am sorry for rambling, I really want this thing to work.

Thank you immensely for your help,

Double resetting will give you the CPLAYBOOT drive?

The CPLAYBOOT drive is now named CIRCUITPY which I believe is a success. The contents in the CIRCUITPY drive is only one entry Microsoft MakeCode app. Am I on the right track?

You seem to be mixing things up. You have to choose between MakeCode and CircuitPython. You can switch back and forth, but each is a completely different environment, they don't mix at the same time. So what exactly are you trying to use?

Help........

I am having a similar issue, when I follow the download for my selected board from the circuitpython.org site my Windows 10 OS can't handle the UF2 file extension and so I search for an app to run and am presented with the Microsoft MakeCode App.

What can I use to download the UF2 file?

A UF2 file is simply copied to the CPLAYBOOT drive that mounts when you double-press reset. Just save it, then copy it to CPLAYBOOT.

Thanks Dastels

Does this mean I have to have the board connected when downloading circuitpython to the laptop?

No, not to download. Save it in your downloads folder (or equivalent). Connect your board if it isn't, and double-press reset. A CPLAYBOOT drive should mount. Copy the UF2 to it. When it's finished copying, CPLAYBOOT should unmount and CIRCUITPY should mount. You can then copy CircuitPython code and libraries to that drive.
