Error lights

by ediez79 on Sun May 02, 2021 12:13 pm

Hello,
I am using the Circuit Playground Express for the first time, and my daughter and I are trying to get it to display a certain pattern of lights when pressing the A button, to play a sound when pressing the B button, and to display some purple lights when shaking. We are using makecode blocks to do this. It worked the first couple of times, but the speaker sounded crackly with the magic wand sound effect. I suspected the speaker was defective, so I changed the sound to wawaawa and a few others. The sound was still crackly, but after a few tries, now when I press the B button, I get a pattern of red and blue lights on the left side, all blue lights on the right side, and a blinking red light at the top by the micro USB connection. At that point, nothing responds and I have to reset it to get it to start over. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a defect? I am attaching a pic of the device and the makecode blocks. Thank you!

For further clarification, I am on a mac. I updated circuit playground to the latest version. I am reading through some of the FAQ now. Could this be caused by hidden files? Also, is the crackly speaker normal, when it was working the first time we ran it?

Just to clarify the current state of the hardware - if you plug it in and press reset, do you get the BOOT folder to show up still?

I think so. After plugging it in and pressing the reset button, a drive appears on my desktop named "CPLAYBOOT," which I have been dragging and dropping the .uf2 files into from makecode. Thanks for any help you can offer!

OK, that sounds like the board is still OK in general. Try uploading another MakeCode example and see what happens. Try something simple, like one of the ready-to-go NeoPixel animations. This is just another basic check to see if at least that code will run as expected.

Thank you. I'm sorry, do you have a link to a ready-to-go NeoPixel animation?

Yes, that particular animation worked just now. Is there something else that could be preventing my code from running?

Can you share your MakeProject and post the link here. We'll try running it here and see compare what happens.

Button A works as expected. Shaking it works (my daughter just wanted it to blink purple for a really short time), but when I press B it is supposed to play the jump sound. Instead, it makes a VERY short squeaking sound (not the full jump up sound as I expected), and the blue and red lights immediately light up, with a flashing red light up by the cable--which I think is some kind of error, but not sure. I then have to reset it to do anything else.

Thank you so much.

Thanks. I tried that and got the same thing. I think it just doesn't like being in the loop like that. Here's a slightly modified version to try:

Wow, you just made my daughter and my day. It works with that code! Thank you so much. She's 8 and loves this thing. We were afraid it was broken! Thanks again :)
