Hallowing sadness

by subzero_ak on Mon Oct 08, 2018 12:40 am

Just opened my AdaBox 009, excited to try out the spooky eyes. However, the screen stays completely dark. I have tried uploading the simple Blink script and the wing seems to work, flashing the red LED on and off per the parameters of the scripts. I have tried uploading the graphics test, no luck. I have tried all of the spooky eyes UF2's and nothing. The screen shows no sign of life. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Just want to double check that you've flipped the on/off switch on the HalloWing? It's at the bottom of the board near the teeth. (I have spent time troubleshooting things on boards that have on/off switches in the past!)

John,
Yes, ensured the switch was turned on. I even tried battery power and power from the USB.

If you double-click the reset button you should see the red led to the right of the usb jack fade up and down, and the NeoPixel at the bottom of the board go green, does this happen for you?

I've tried that a couple of times. The green LED comes on. Sometimes the red light pulses, sometimes it flickers, then stays red.

OK, so that sounds like you're getting to bootloader mode. And you see a drive on your computer named HALLOWBOOT? That's how you dragged on a .uf2 file such as these, I'm guessing https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-hallowing/spooky-eyes

It's worth trying a different USB port as well as the battery just to rule out insufficient power.

I seem to be having the same problem as the OP. I can't even get blink to work. I can get to the bootloader and it seems to download just fine but I haven't been able to get anything to happen after I download the code.

The end of my log upload log with verbose on is:
[====================== ] 75% (128/170 pages)write(addr=0x20005000,size=0xa80)
writeBuffer(scr_addr=0x20005000, dst_addr=0x4000, size=0xa80)

[==============================] 100% (170/170 pages)
done in 0.066 seconds

Verify 10832 bytes of flash with checksum.
checksumBuffer(start_addr=0x2000, size=0x1000) = 2b2e
checksumBuffer(start_addr=0x3000, size=0x1000) = 9118
checksumBuffer(start_addr=0x4000, size=0xa50) = 49a8
Verify successful
done in 0.015 seconds
CPU reset.
readWord(addr=0)=0x20002dd8
readWord(addr=0xe000ed00)=0x410cc601
readWord(addr=0x41002018)=0x10010305
writeWord(addr=0xe000ed0c,value=0x5fa0004)

Then nothing until I doubleclick the reset button.

I've tried it with and without the battery.
I've set the board to AdaFruit Feather M0 Express and AdaFruit Feather M0 (to see if that was the problem)
I've tried two different micro-USB cables one of which came with ADABOX008.
I've tried different ports on my Lenovo P51 laptop running Fedora28.

When I enable the serial monitor after a few seconds it says that it cannot find /dev/ttyACM0

The Eye demo was working when I first got the board and so I don't think it is broken. I just have run out of ideas of how to troubleshoot this problem.

I'm running Arduino 1.8.7
And I am running the original UF2 file that came with the Hallowing
$ ls
CURRENT.UF2 INDEX.HTM INFO_UF2.TXT
$ cat INFO_UF2.TXT
UF2 Bootloader v2.0.0-adafruit.0-21-g887cc30 SFHWRO
Model: Hallowing M0
Board-ID: SAMD21G18A-Feather-v0

I have tried the battery, different cables, different power supplies from Adafruit and different USB ports. I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with the screen only. The board runs other sketches but not so much as a light or pixel shows up on the screen. I tried every spooky eyes demo.

Subzero, please email support@adafruit.com referencing this forum post and ask to have a new HalloWing sent out.

@kg6fnk are you able to get into bootloader mode and drag on one of these eyeball .uf2 files and get the screen to show the animation? https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-hallowing/spooky-eyes
