Trying out the SDR in Adabox007, I couldn't pick up any signals. I took off the tiny antenna it ships with and screwed on a longer telescoping antenna... and just barely picked out enough weather radio signal to tell it was there, to hear scraps of voice from just 5 miles away. On FM broadcast band, I couldn't pick out our local 100KW station from 12 miles away. I have no trouble picking up either of these transmissions on another RTL-SDR I bought a couple months ago. I would have tried swapping antenna cables but one is SMA and the other is not.

That sounds strange. The first thing I'd do is double check settings in the SDR software you're using -- that 100kW station ought to be pretty strong with or without the antenna.
