Hallowing screen goes blank

by rickseiden on Fri Sep 28, 2018 4:38 pm

I just got my Adabox and turned on my Hallowing. The eyeball looked around for a while, and then the screen went all white. I tried turning it off and on again, and resetting it, and it still just showed a blank white screen. I couldn't get the eyeball back. Then I plugged in into my computer and downloaded the human eyeball sketch to it, and now I have an eye again. But after a while, say about 2 to 3 minutes, the screen goes all white again, and I have to reset it or turn it on and off to get the eyeball back.

Is this expected behavior, or should that eyeball stay on the screen while it's powered on?

Thanks
Rick

That's not how it's supposed to behave.

My first guess for a source of the issue would be a glitch in the power. What are you using as a power source for the Hallowing?

I too had this problem. I've been trying to follow along with the tutorials, but I'm still one with a black screen.

MU will not recognize the device (yes the cable is a data cable)

The scary Halloween script code.py will not run say there is an error in line 6, import board. I've placed the images on the device and they don't rotate thru.

I'm sure it is something very simple.

Same issue screen blank and dark no sketch of the eye is playing. On back neopixel is fading green and small led is fluttering yellow on "charge" led. none of the video formats to upload work to submit what im seing on back neopixel of the board.

How I FIXED MY ISSUE:

Hallowing ships with a pre-loaded example of a human eye that looks around, blinks and reacts to light.

If you want to put the original spooky eye demo back on your Hallowing, (enter bootloader mode by double-clicking the Reset button and then drag this UF2 file over onto HALLOWBOOT:

There’s a few customized variants as well, such as a fiery dragon eye:

A brown, animal-ish eye with no visible sclera:

And a psychedelic eye from our Eye of Newt guide:

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE

Where did you get the uf2 file from? I've double clicked the reset button, long pressed the reset button and i can get both the HALLOWBOOT and CIRCUITPY disks to show up in Finder (Mac). But still don't get the spooky eye or any other image.

The .uf2 files are available on this page: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-hallowing/spooky-eyes

Thanks John for the link. All four of the spooky eyes all work as expected.

But, I still can't get the Hallowing to work following the tutorial at https://learn.adafruit.com/motion-activ ... cuitpython .

Attached is what the circuitpy looks like. I'm not sure what I'm missing but, nothing shows on the screen. LED on the bottom (Back) cycles thru the colours and nothing else.

A very helpful thing to do when debugging trouble with a CircuitPython board is to look at the serial output to see what error messages are being created. If you're not familiar with using a serial console with HalloWing, check this out: https://learn.adafruit.com/welcome-to-circuitpython/kattni-connecting-to-the-serial-console and the REPL page https://learn.adafruit.com/welcome-to-circuitpython/the-repl
You'll need to use something like Screen on the mac or PuTTY on Windows, as Mu won't show the REPL/Serial console for HalloWing the way it does for other boards (CPX, Feather M0 Express, etc.)

I'm guessing there's either some errant typo in the code on your board or a missing library/mismatched library to CircuitPython version.

This is the output of the Serial Console

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
soft reboot

Auto-reload is on. Simply save files over USB to run them or enter REPL to disable.
code.py output:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "code.py", line 7, in <module>
ImportError: no module named 'displayio'

Press any key to enter the REPL. Use CTRL-D to reload.

The code is from the tutorial and used the "copy code" to take it from the tutorial to the MU IDE.

REPL output for modules

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
To list built-in modules please do `help("modules")`.
>>> help("modules")
__main__          adafruit_lis3dh   gamepad           samd
adafruit_bus_device/__init__        analogio          gc                storage
adafruit_bus_device/i2c_device      array             math              struct
adafruit_bus_device/spi_device      audiobusio        microcontroller   supervisor
adafruit_hid/__init__               audioio           micropython       sys
adafruit_hid/consumer_control       bitbangio         neopixel          time
adafruit_hid/consumer_control_code  board             neopixel_write    touchio
adafruit_hid/gamepad                builtins          os                uerrno
adafruit_hid/keyboard               busio             pulseio           ure
adafruit_hid/keyboard_layout_us     collections       random            usb_hid
adafruit_hid/keycode                digitalio         rotaryio
adafruit_hid/mouse                  framebuf          rtc
Plus any modules on the filesystem

I don't see anything for "displayio". Or would it not show up here?

Been 10 days. any ideas on what I should be looking at. The hollowing_circuit just will not work. Spooky eyes seem to work just fine.

Is there an update to Circuit Python that I could load on the unit that might jump start things? I see it is Adafruit CircuitPython 3.0.0-rc.0-1089-g3700bc83b-dirty .

The line in your serial output that says:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
ImportError: no module named 'displayio'
means that your HalloWing doesn't have the displayio library loaded onto it. I'm pretty sure this library is part of CircuitPython alpha 4.0.0 release, so maybe you don't have that version of CircuitPython on your board? https://learn.adafruit.com/hallowing-jump-scare-trap/code-with-circuitpython go to that page and download the CircuitPython .uf2 and then put your HalloWing in bootloader mode. Then drag on that .uf2.

Thanks John,

took a couple of drag-n-drops, but it did finally start to work.

Now to complete the build.

Thanks again,

Scott
