PYGAMER not functioning with battery or USB power

by jaredm1 on Sat Jun 29, 2019 11:06 pm

I received my Adabox 012 and the pygamer appears to be non-functional with either the battery or with USB power. If the battery is inserted, there is no signs of life. If the USB cable is installed the charging light blinks rapidly, but no other lights turn on. Is there any additional troubleshooting steps to follow?

Just double checking -- have you tried flipping the on-off switch on and off a couple of times?

Thanks for your reply John. I have tried flipping the power switch a number of times, and also pressing/depressing the reset button in the off chance that was hanging things up with no luck. Other than maybe some slightly excess flux on the backside around the joystick solder pads (doesn't really show up in the picture) I don't see anything abnormal with the board either.

Without the battery installed, please try plugging it into a computer with a variety of USB cables and both through a USB hub (if you have one) and directly. Ideally we'll see the screen come on and you'll get to the bootloader screen.

I attempted again with 4 different USB cables (non-power only, work with other Adafruit products) through both a powered USB hub and directly to my PC with no luck. Other than the CHG LED lighting up, there are no signs of life elsewhere. This is the first issue I have ever had with an Adafruit product.

Sorry, there seems to be an issue with the board. Please email support at adafruit dot com for a replacement and reference this forum post.

I'm having the same problem - no response for my Mac running Mojave 10.14.5 with or without battery. I've tried a number of cables and I have two that work fine with a Circuit Playground Express. There appears to be no power to the board except for the CHG light (it blinks when the battery is not installed; it is solid if the battery is installed).

With one of the good cables I tried a Linux box and got the same result.

The connection to the Pygamer is from the Apple USB-C adapter which has HDMI and USB-C output. I've had no trouble connecting through this device for other circuit playground, arduino, and feather devices.

There is an odd shape near the audio jack - the edge looks broken (I've attached a picture).

That is called a "mouse bite" -- it's the perforated tab of the PCB that gets snapped away from the larger panel during manufacturing. No problem leaving it as is, or you can smooth it with a small file.

You're never seeing a red LED on the PyGamer when it's plugged in?

No - only the light for charging.

Just to check - have you flipped the ON/OFF switch on and off a few times? Also, with it in the on position, when you press and release the RESET button, does a red LED (labeled D13) come on briefly?

The d13 LED never lights up.

Yes - I did try the on/off and multiple reset tries because it was suggested earlier in the forum. I don't see any obvious problems with the board - it looks very clean to me.
