Monster M4sk + GridEye = eyes that watch you

by teejaydub on Thu Oct 03, 2019 10:02 pm

I'm working on making a skull that will look at you with glowing eyes.

The Monster M4sk has worked out great, and combined with the Grid-EYE infrared sensor breakout and a little firmware mod, the eyes track the center of a heat source pretty well.

I'm documenting the project on a new media site called Factr: https://factr.com/u/timothy-weber/halloween-skull. There is a little video there of the current status, and all the details if you're interested.

Thanks, Adafruit! This has been really fun so far!

Rather than using a heat sensor, I thought about using a pair of PIR sensors on either side of the M4SK, and use it to move the eyes back and forth. I.e. if the left sensor detects something closer than the right sensor, the eyes would look left:

I thought about using a pair of PIR sensors on either side of the M4SK, . . .

That would probably work. But it would not be very responsive. PIR sensors are pretty sluggish - even when you dial the retrigger time down to a minimum.

I did something similar several years ago for some animatronic eyes using an array of 3 of the Sharp IR rangefinders. It worked reasonably well, but the GridEye gives you a lot more resolution in a tiny fraction of the volume.

Yeah, I didn't think PIR sensors would have the speed and sensitivity to get much verisimilitude, and then they usually have pretty large white hemispheres over them that would be a little hard to work into a skull.

I think you'd probably get the best results with a night-vision camera with face recognition - but that's more expensive and complicated (probably requires a separate Raspberry Pi to handle the recognition) and seemed more time-consuming.

So far the performance on this seems pretty good. I have yet to test it in the target environment - outdoors at night at about 2-4 meters - but I'm hoping "dark and cold" only enhances the contrast with a face.

Interesting to know about the PIR sensors. Thanks.
