Feather M0 Express / Prop Maker Wing - No Sound

by darsk on Tue Jan 14, 2020 1:02 am

I've tried numerous examples attempting to get any kind of sound out of this what so ever. No luck. I've checked all solder connections, tried many example scripts, switched out speakers, searched everywhere for a similar problem, and nothing.

What am I missing? Thanks

What got me at first was forgetting to turn on the propmaker wing power. D10 I believe.

I’m brand new at Pyrhon (1 day) so am not sure how this is done. I expect it should be super simple. Thanks!

I do hear the faintest of crackles, so I suspect the software is correct. I've tried turning the little pot up & down. I thought maybe pin A0 on the Feather M0 Express would be able to make a sound on its own when hooked up to a speaker, but nope.

Where do I go from here?

Can you post a photo of you board/connections?

The two boards are connected via headers. The switch goes to the enable connections of the Prop Maker Wing. The speaker is plugged into the JST speaker jack. Power (and updates) come from the USB data cable and a late 2015 Mac.

I've checked the solder connections and they appear to be good. I'm an experienced solderer.

Thanks

That looks good. What is the code you're trying to run?

I've tried the complex to the simple - lightsaber code to a sine wave. The latest is what you recommended. I downloaded the audio file specified by the example.

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
"""Simple example to play a wave file"""
# This example only works on Feathers that have analog audio out!
import digitalio
import board
import audioio

WAV_FILE_NAME = "StreetChicken.wav"  # Change to the name of your wav file!

enable = digitalio.DigitalInOut(board.D10)
enable.direction = digitalio.Direction.OUTPUT
enable.value = True

with audioio.AudioOut(board.A0) as audio:  # Speaker connector
    wave_file = open(WAV_FILE_NAME, "rb")
    wave = audioio.WaveFile(wave_file)

    audio.play(wave)
    while audio.playing:
        pass

That should work. Does the feather work otherwise?

Sounds to me like a bad amplifier for some reason. Please email support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread, your order number, and request a replacement of one Prop Maker FeatherWing.

I think the Propmaker is good. Shouldn't the M0 Express have some kind audio coming from A0? I suspect the Feather m0 Express may be the one with the problem.

OK, can I ask you to redo the soldering on A0 on both boards. Just in case.
