Recommended ESP32-S3 dev kit?

by rando on Fri Jan 28, 2022 1:19 pm

Howdy!,

Was wondering what Espressif native dev board was considered best in anticipation of Circuit Python support soon?

There's quite a variety of systems with/without external PSRAM, and I was wondering if that was a requirement?

I'm sure there is a cool feather for the ESP32-S3 in the works, but I was wanting to get experience early.

Best,

Randy

I was able to get one of these ordered before XMAS.

ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N8 - ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 Dev Board - 8MB Flash PID: 5312

https://www.adafruit.com/product/5312

I will look at Scott's stream today and see if that clarifies the matter. I will miss his Friday missives.

Best,

Randy

All of the S3 dev boards should be supported. (It they aren't we should add a board def.) You'll likely have a better CircuitPython experience on boards with more RAM. (S3 without PSRAM is still better than S2 without it.)

This worked better than expected! (Mostly luck to be honest)

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
1. On windows 11 install,  I was able to install esptool  from/to/on Anaconda 3.9 cli terminal prompt

2. Forced ESP32-S3 into boot mode (solid white light) by fiddling with reset/boot keys. Be patient!!!

3. Ran exactly as follows: esptool -p COM8 write_flash 0x0 adafruit-circuitpython-espressif_esp32s3_devkitc_1_n8-en_US-20220128-3fb5023.bin //Yesterday's Circuit Python binary for the ESP32-S3 (8 gb Flash, no PSRAM)

4. Reset

5. Got circuitpy drive as L: Drive

6. Thonny rational, and working fine

G-Day!
