Bluetooth / Wifi / Radio support in MicroPython

by mangelschots on Mon Jan 02, 2017 11:08 am

Hi,
On the MicroPython tutorial for SAMD21:
https://learn.adafruit.com/micropython-for-samd21

It states that Bluetooth / Wifi and Radio feature on the Feather Mo boards is not supported (yet) by MicroPython.

Is anyone actively working on adding that capability to MicroPython ?
If so, what would be the ETA on that capability?
Where would this be announced if it becomes available?

Who would be the one 'responsible' for adding this capability: the Adafruit team or the MicroPython community in general?

Thanks for the question!

No one is actively working on Wifi/Bluetooth support for the M0 boards. Its not likely to come any time soon either. The M0 may not have the code space required to store the Bluetooth and Wifi code. Instead, the ESP8266 (aka Feather HUZZAH, in stock at Digi-Key) is a better, existing solution for Wifi connectivity and the ESP32 or an NRF chip would provide better Bluetooth support in the future.

No one in particular is responsible for adding this support. Like any open source project, its up to the person who wants to use it to create it. Adafruit's M0 effort is currently focused on introducing beginners to programming inexpensive hardware. So, we won't get to it soon.
