Windows10 Driver issues?

by JustTheDazz on Wed May 09, 2018 11:25 pm

I have been trying to get the circuit playground express updated to the most recent version today, so far I am having an issue when I press the reset button and get it into UF2 boot loader mode, when I do I cannot put any files on it to update, it just hangs there without any error messages or anything.

The guide I am using is here https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-cir ... quickstart

I can see when I press the reset button all the neopixels all turn green, the small led pulses red, and it shows as CPLAYBOOT. The problem is I cannot place any files on it, nothing, and my file explorer seems to hang until I press the reset button, at which point it goes back into it's normal mode.

I have tried 3 different windows10 computers, two are desktops, and one is a laptop.
I have tried several diffferent USB cables

Is there something else I can try?

When you see CPLAYBOOT, that's the time to copy the circuitplayground .uf2 to it. It should blink a little and then you should see CIRCUITPY, at which point you can copy your code and libraries over. Is that not happening?

CPLAYBOOT is a fake USB drive that is solely for copying .uf2's onto (and looking at the UF2 version info, etc.).

Forgot to add this, but this is as far as I can ever get. It will just sit there like this and no errors or anything

I've never seen that before. Could you paste what's in the INFO_UF2.TXT file here? Thanks.

I would but it just freezes when I try to see what's in that file, it's like Windows is locking me out of the device?

OK, at this point I'd say the board appears to be defective. Please send an email to support@adafruit.com with a pointer to this thread and your order number, asking for a replacement, and they'll take care of you.

One more last gasp thing to try: if you have a USB2 hub, try interposing it between the host nad board.

Okay, I do actually have a couple USB 2.0 powered hubs that I tried with the same result. I just tried this on a new Feather M0 express I got in today with the same issue. I also have the new Metro M4 Express, but I have no intention of plugging that in until I can sort out what is going on here.

If you are seeing this on multiple boards now, then yes, I suspect something on the host computers. Any new installs since the other boards last worked? Do you use a third-party anti-virus program that's the same across all the machines? Also, have you installed, even as a trial, Acronis backup software or other backup software? We have seen remnants of Acronis Backup interfere with some boards, even after it was supposedly uninstalled.

I myself recently upgraded the Windows 10 machines to the Spring Windows 10 Update (1803), and also today's security updates, and my CPX is still working fine on it.

I am running norton security on all my pc's, but I did disable it to see if it made any difference which it didn't. I think I might of had acronis as some point, but I don't remember, is there something I can do to see if it's still on the pc's other than add/remove programs?

I found the information about removing the Acronis software, which I ran and then rebooted my main pc, still no luck so I started looking around to see what else I could disable or remove to try, come to find out there's a software monitoring package I have been using for years called AIDA64, as soon as I disabled it, everything works now!

Thank you for helping me with this, I wouldn't of thought about disabling that program ....

Thanks for the caution about AIDA64! I saw one mention several years old that AIDA64's disk scanning might interfere with a USB drive, but not much else. It may be that the recent Windows upgrades have changed its operation in some way.

I ran AIDI64 on 2 desktops and my laptop, and I would of never guessed it would cause problems. Then again I haven't re-subscribed for the yearly fee in a while either, and then I thought I don't even use it anymore so it's now removed from all my pc's.

I was thinking it could be the latest Windows 10 update as well, but I haven't seen too much on the new update causing something like the problem I had.
Thanks again!

AIDA64 users: The AIDA64 folks have a beta version that they hope fixes the problem. Info here:
https://forums.aida64.com/topic/4296-uf ... to-freeze/
If you try it could you report back there and/or here? Thanks.
