OSX cant find port on PyGamer

by pjkarlik on Sat Feb 06, 2021 7:56 pm

I have both PyGamer and PyBadge - my osx can find the PyBadge port / upload - works great! PyGamer while works when turned on, I cant get it to be found by my OSX laptop (MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2019 - BigSur 11.2). Can currently use other Arduino boards with no problem (MetroMini / TinyCircuits / Random SAMD21 boards..)

Double-tap the reset button on the PyGamer. If that does not help, blame Big Sur, it's an evil OS.

Double tap does nothing but reboot the device and load the mini game it comes with. The PyBadge goes right to the bootloader - can't seem to get this one to do that.

Maybe there is a way to flash it as PyBadge. It would not hurt to do that.

https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pyg ... bootloader
Or the correct one.
Seems to be an OSX issue indeed, but Adafruit made a fix.

No it won't get to that stage. I don't see it connecting as a drive or showing up when you connect via usb (and I've tried a few cables which work with their PyBadge and other arduino's)

Does the board do anything when powered? Please post photos of the front and back.

Front and back.
When I power on I get the red lights across the bottom - then white and it goes to the DigiKey/Adafruit game - demo..

Double clicking or clicking twice on reset just reboots into the demo game.

Ok, the timing on the reset double click can be a bit tricky to get the hang of. Try it with a variety of timings. You should see the screen change indicating you should drop a new file onto it.

I've tried a frequency of clicks here - haha - uh but it doesn't change over like the PyBadge does, nor do I get any drive showing up on my Mac. There are moments where the blank screen seems to pause slightly longer but it still goes right into the DigiKey thing :-(

This is very weird! Clearly the microcontroller and screen are ok if the game appears. If the reset button does cause a restart then it's ok too. Do you get a serial port when the game is running? Do you have any other computers you can try?

So no port when game playing.
Tried Win10 and another Big Sur OSX - nothing shows up. To validate I tried the PyBadge and it would show up on the PC / mac.
is there anyway to force update or check that the USB is working on the device (past power?) I have a feather MO board - ? if there is a way to check - limited tools here.. just trying to think how to get this working.

I was checking whether it would be an option to put the PyBadge bootloader on the PyGamer, but if you check the schematics, they are pretty different in some areas. Feels like the PyGamer is an older device, maybe thats the reason for older incompatible firmware.

If a make:Code program is loaded, then to get into the bootloader, you need to single-click, not double-click. I just loaded an arcade.makecode.com game on a PyBadge and verified that single-click goes to the bootloader.

This is true in general with any of our boards loaded with a make:Code program.
