Circuit Playground Bluefruit - 6.2.0 - USB drive not loading

by sermann on Tue Apr 06, 2021 10:35 am

Hi,

I've run into the same issue with two Circuit Playground Bluefruit by upgrading the OS to CircuitPython 6.2.0 where the devices do not show up in Windows Explorer or MU.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Double click on the reset button. All 10 NeoPixels light up green

2. Drag and drop adafruit-circuitpython-circuitplayground_bluefruit-en_US-6.2.0.uf2 to the CPLAYBYBOOT drive. All 10 NeoPixels turn red. Device does not reboot on its own

3. Click on the reset button. Device is not accessible in any way. Power LED is on. Activity LED is dark.

I can reliably access CPLAYBTBOOT, but not the CircuitPython drive.

Bootloader info:

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
UF2 Bootloader 0.4.1 lib/nrfx (v2.0.0) lib/tinyusb (0.6.0-272-g4e6aa0d8) lib/uf2 (remotes/origin/configupdate-9-gadbb8c7)
Model: Adafruit Circuit Playground nRF52840
Board-ID: nRF52840-CircuitPlayground-revD
SoftDevice: S140 version 6.1.1
Date: Feb 17 2021

Attempted fixes:

1. I've tried installing 6.1.0, without any visible results.

2. Tried installing an Arduino Blink sketch which works fine. Tried installing CircuitPython 6.1.0 and 6.2.0 with the same results as before.

3. Tried running the erase file (CP_Bluefruit_QSPI_Erase.uf2), which seems to work (blue NeoPixel for about 1 seconds, then green), and then 6.1.0. No improvements.

Running out of ideas on how to fix this.

Would you have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Stephen

It sounds like the CPB was originally working OK? This only happened when you tried to update the firmware to 6.2.0?

That is correct. Both CPB's were working perfectly until I installed 6.2.0.

Tried the second one to see if it was a fluke...

OK, could be a few things. But we should be able to recover. First, make sure you can still get this to work:
1. Double click on the reset button. All 10 NeoPixels light up green

You should also see a folder show up with BOOT in the name.

Then, double check your board and make sure it's this one:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/4333
and not this one:

Hi Carter,

Thanks for jumpin in.

Yes, I can easily get in boot mode, and the CPLAYBTBOOT drive shows up.

And yes, these are both Circuit Playground Bluefruits. They are blue, not black, and have the Bluetooth symbol between the speaker and antenna.

Remembered something: I've upgraded the bootloaders to version 0.4.1 in February using adafruit-nrfutil.

Tried connecting the boards to two Windows 10 and a MacOS Big Sur system. Same results.

What would you suggest?

Cheers,

Stephen

Issue fixed by downgrading the bootloader to 0.3.2 and reinstalling CircuitPython 6.2.0

The issue was bootloader 0.4.1.

Thank you for your help!

Cheers,

Stephen

I tested bootloaders 0.5.0 and 0.4.1 and could not replicate this problem, but I'm glad that a rollback worked for you. It's possible the 0.4.1 upgrade went awry in some way. No need to upgrade the bootloader if it's working fine. We'll keep an eye out for similar issues. Thanks for your patience and proactive solution!
