Are I2C pullups needed with alphanumeric backpack

Are I2C pullups needed with alphanumeric backpack

Perhaps the backpack has built in pullup resistors on the I2C lines, so none are needed for the Itsy Bitsy 5V?
Any ideas?

All of our i2c breakouts and backpacks come with 10K pullups on SDA and SCL.

According to the schematic they have pull-ups.
