I have a MBP using Arduino 1.8.5.
I have the links in to download and have downloaded the 'adafruit avr' boards and all.
When trying to compile only...
I'm getting the board error. When I switch the board to Uno it works. But, when I switch to itsybitsy 32u, I get the error.
This is using the 'Blink' example.
Below is a copy of the IDE window:

That usually means the files in the board support package have gotten messed up. The easiest solution is to throw everything out and reinstall them from scratch:
In the Finder, click the Go menu and then press the Option key. You'll see a new item named 'Library' appear in the list. Select that, then find and throw away the folder named 'Arduino15'. Then run the Arduino IDE and reinstall the Adafruit AVR Boards support package through the Boards Manager as usual.

That worked like a charm!
Thank you. I'll have to remember that fix.
