Hi,
I'm trying to upload an 8,000+ line C++ program to one of many ItsyBitsy M4s that I own. When I double click on the reset button, the red LED flashes quickly instead of slowly. When I plug it in Windows 10 complains "USB device not recognized". This is actually happening to at least 5 of the 20 ItsyBitsy M4s that I own (and I know it sounds crazy but it feels like the problem is spreading!). I do have one (and only one) that's working correctly; i.e. it is recognized by Windows 10 and it will enter bootloader mode (when I double click on reset the red LED flashes slowly, not quickly). I have tried rebooting the Windows 10 machine and I've also tried reinstalling the Windows device drivers and neither action improved the situation (or made it worse). It's also the case that I'm seeing similar behavior with Ubuntu and Raspbien operating systems. The "good" ItsyBitsy M4 will enter bootloader mode when plugged into Windows, Ubuntu or Raspbien, the "bad" ItsyBitsy M4s will not. None of them will enter bootloader mode if I just plug them into a 5v power supply. This behavior seems to have just started. I've been working with the ItsyBitsy M4 for about 18 months now and I've never seen this problem. Do I need to acquire the necessary equipment (e.g. J-Link EDU Mini) and re-burn the bootloaders? It's impossible now for me to upload new code via the Arduino IDE to the affected ItsyBitsy M4 devices. This is a big problem for me because I have many of these devices in the remote field and I'll need to be able to have folks upload new firmware to them periodically via BOSSA and the procedure, which I've documented for them, needs to operate flawlessly. I have quite a large investment in these ItsyBitsy M4s so I'd really like to solve this problem!
Thanks,
Dan Murphy

Can you take a look at viewtopic.php?f=62&t=165228 and see if it could be related to this failure?

Re: ItsyBitsyM4s, not able to enter bootloader mode when res
Thanks kmevans. I was wondering about the same thing but while I was experiencing the problem I was not able to update the bootloaders to the new version. I have good news though; I think the problem is related to the USB to micro USB cables that I was using to connect to the devices. Because the micro USB slot is fragile, I like to use the magnetic cables, e.g.: https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Ant-i-Pr ... 430&sr=8-3
When I use these cables the behavior I described in the original post is sometimes (mostly) observed. When I use a 'regular' cable I am not seeing the issue (I don't think). Therefore I would like everyone to please stand down on this issue unless I find that I can reproduce it consistently with a 'regular' cable (and note also that these magnetic cables can be problematic and perhaps pass that advice along to others). I did use the magnetic cables for a while without incident, so the issue wasn't obvious to me.
Thank you for the time and effort spent on thinking about this problem and apologies for the mis-direction. By the way, I have now uploaded the bootloader for all 25 of my ItsyBitsy M4s to 3.9. I have four in the field that have not been updated and I'll let you know if I encounter this problem with them even with a 'regular' cable.
Best,
Dan Murphy
