There are three likely possibilities here:
1. Make sure you are selecting your exact board from the Arduino IDE. There is a 3v and 5v version with a 8MHz and 16MHz option.
2. There is a required Windows driver depending on your Win version.

3. You must be using a valid USB Data cable. You can verify it with another microcontroller or USB storage device if you are unsure, but a random USB charge only cable is the most common reason for a board not being detected.
