Hi All,
Help me out, I can't select any port.
I have Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 - 5V 16Mhz. I have windows 10, Tried both Arduino 1.8.19 and Arduino IDE 1.8.19, loaded various drivers, such as the QMK toolbox, adafruit drivers, etc. The computer makes the "bing" when plugging in so I think I have a data cable. Nothing seems to let me choose a port.
Help!

Re: Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 - 5V 16MHz: Couldn't find a Boar
Try manually bootloading. Pressing the 'reset' button on the ItsyBitsy just as the code is uploading.
https://learn.adafruit.com/introducting ... 2979293-22Manually bootloading
If you ever get in a 'weird' spot with the bootloader, or you have uploaded code that crashes and doesn't auto-reboot into the bootloader, click the RST button to get back into the bootloader. The red LED will pulse, so you know that its in bootloader mode. Do the reset button press right as the Arduino IDE says its attempting to upload the sketch, when you see the Yellow Arrow lit and the Uploading... text in the status bar.

Don't click the reset button before uploading, unlike other bootloaders you want this one to run at the time Arduino is trying to upload

Re: Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 - 5V 16MHz: Couldn't find a Boar
That didnt work, the port is still grayed out
here is the error, while doing the reset:
Arduino: 1.8.19 (Windows 10), Board: "Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 5V 16MHz"
Sketch uses 3378 bytes (11%) of program storage space. Maximum is 28672 bytes.
Global variables use 149 bytes of dynamic memory.
Couldn't find a Board on the selected port. Check that you have the correct port selected. If it is correct, try pressing the board's reset button after initiating the upload.
This report would have more information with
"Show verbose output during compilation"
option enabled in File -> Preferences.

do you see a red led pulse or blink when pressing the reset button

The red LED is solid not blinking or pulsing?
Have you tried plugging in another other known good boards just to confirm the USB cable and USB port you are good?

I tried 2 cables, not sure if they are good or are data cables. I figured since the computer beeped and shows it in the drivers that it is a data cable and works.
I’m thinking I possibly have the wrong driver?

Windows 10 has the necessary drivers for this board built-in.
What do you see when you look in the device manger under COMs ports?
Are you plugging into a USB2 hub or USB3 port?
You might want to purchase a known good data cable to rule out that issue if you do not have another controller to plug and verify. Most USB cables are charge only.

Re: Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 - 5V 16MHz: Couldn't find a Boar
OK it does appear that I have USB3 ports only on this PC. Is there a workaround for only having USB3 ports? They are supposed to be backwards compatible, correct? I did get a similar error on the old computer with USB2 ports.
Here is what I got when first pugging in
Then after scouring the internet for a driver I had this: Neither works.

Re: Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 - 5V 16MHz: Couldn't find a Boar
Good job. You have validated the USB cable and the ItsyBitsy controller by getting the 32u4 recognized over USB.
If you have a powered USB2 hub that is the easiest work around for a possible USB3 issue. USB3 is backwards compatible, but overwhelm these processors with too much throughput on initial connection.
There is also a possibility the bootloader is in a bad place, but I suspect it is working as the board showed up as DFU and not-DFU.
Back to any earlier question. Is the red LED solid, pulsing or flashing?
Can you post a screenshot of the Arduino IDE "Tools" menu pull down and serial port that you cannot select?

Re: Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 - 5V 16MHz: Couldn't find a Boar
So ATm32U4DFU is the correct driver?
The board just shows a solid red light - should it be flashing?
I did try this on my old computer which has USB2 ports, and same thing.
here is Arduino software without the port: If I try to burn the bootloader I get:
Arduino: 1.8.19 (Windows 10), Board: "Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 5V 16MHz"
Error while burning bootloader.
avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)

Re: Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 - 5V 16MHz: Couldn't find a Boar
Thank you for trying on an older machine with USB2 port.
Let's do a replacement. Not having a fading (or pulsing) LED is an issue. A happy bootloader should be gently pulsing red.
The DFU on the device name you are seeing most likely means the board was in bootloader mode when plugged in.
Please send an e-mail to [email protected] requesting a replacement for your ItsyBitsy. Include your order# and a link to this forum thread.

Ok thanks, is there a version with the headers soldered on? That’s the hardest part for me.

Re: Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 - 5V 16MHz: Couldn't find a Boar
No, the ItsyBitsy does not come in a version with headers pre-soldered.
Now that you mention that you should post a photo of your 32u4 with any soldering you have done to it as that can definitely cause a communication issue.
The only 32u4 I have found that ships with headers is the Bluefruit Feather version. There is also some Feather M0 and M4 that ship with headers. You can search for "with headers" (no quotes) in the adafruit store.
