Metro Mini not connecting to IDE over USB

by jolaw on Sat May 05, 2018 4:14 am

Hello,

I have a Metro Mini 326 5V 16 MHZ with CP2104. I installed the SiLabs driver on my Mac. When opening Arduino 1.6.7 I choose the Board: Arduino/ Genuino Uno, and Programmer is set to "AVR ISP", but no port shows.

When connected, in Arduino, port does not show USB.

In system profiler, I can see that it is connected (see screenshot attached).

I changed the USB cables, and restarted the program and the computer a number of times but the result is the same.

When I plug in the Metro Mini, the green light comes on, and the red light (#13) blinks. But that is it.

Is there something wrong with this particular board? Or is there something I can do?

Thanks for your help.

Jo

Double-check your USB cable by using it to connect some other, known-working device to the computer.

There's a plague of charge-only cables out there with USB connectors at both ends, but no wires for the data signals. We see people get caught by those every day, and it's normal for people to say they had to try three or four cables before finding an actual USB cable.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the advice.

I tried 6 different cables over 2 USB ports using Arduino 1.6.7 and 1.8.5. These cables work fine my Flora, Trinket Pro and Trinket boards, but none will have the Metro Mini show up. Both versions of Arduino have Adafruit AVR Boards by Adafruit (1.4.12) installed, which include Adafruit Metro.

Someone suggested that I should install: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm which I did (I am on MAC OS 10.10.5) and restarted the computer.

But alas, no luck.

It would be good to find out whether this is just an isolated funky board or something that I am not doing correctly (or other failing equipment). I am planning to get a couple more of Metro minis for a project. Flora, Trinket Pro and Trinket have all worked very well for my projects so far with no problem.

Thank you.

Best,
Jo

It sounds like something is wrong with the board's bootloader.

When did you get the Metro Mini?

I bought it through Little Bird Electronics (Sydney, Australia) and they ordered it online through Adafruit. I believe Little Bird is an official distributor of Adafruit products in Australia. They ordered the part in md-March 2018 and I recieved it in early April 2018.

Anything I can do?

I included some photos of the board here:

If you have an Arduino, you can try uploading a new bootloader to the microcontroller. This page has instructions for the Uno, which is functionally identical to the Metro and Metro Mini:

Hi Mike,

Thanks for this. I had great hope, but alas: "avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x2341/0x49)
Error while burning bootloader."

I used an Arduino UNO as the programmer and followed the instructions on the page you sent. I also set up the leds as indicators.

I repeated the steps a number of times. Uploading the program was not a problem, but when burning the bootloader, it would tell me that it may take a minute but then would result in 'Error while Burning Bootloader'. But the Error led indicator does not come on.

You can see that I uncommented the line "#define USE_OLD_STYLE_WIRING".

I noticed that once I connected pin#13 of the boards together, the Programmer's (UNO) onboard led started to blink in sync with the Target's (Metro Mini) set by the Blink which I think came with the Metro Mini (?) Without this connection, the Programmer's (UNO) onboard led stays on.

Any of these getting closer to finding out what is wrong with the board?

Hello,

I have an update. I made an error in my last attempt but I thought it might be worthwhile leaving up the last post. I chose Arduino ISP instead of Arduino as ISP. So I successfully burnt the bootloader onto the Metro Mini. But....

I am now back to square one, the usb port is still not showing..... when I forced the upload, it says 'avrdude: ser_open(): can't open device "/dev/cu.usbmodem1411": No such file or directory ioctl("TIOCMGET"): Inappropriate ioctl for device'

Still not connecting....

Hello,
I am trying to connect my Gemma to my macbook pro. I keep getting error "avrdude error could not find usbtiny device (ox17181/ox9c) .
I have tried restarting, I have tried unistalling arduino, I have tried following the boatloader and clicking the reset button. My uno connects fine but this device just doesnt even seem to be recognized by my computer. no idea what to do and need to figure out asap because I have a workshop I am hosting!

A couple of questions. Have you tried using a USB2 connection and does your MacBook see the USB connection when you plug the Gemma in? Also which version of the Gemma are you using?

@jolaw: It sounds like something has gone wrong with the microcontroller or the USB-to-Serial converter. Send a note to the reseller telling them we've authorized a replacement.

They can contact our business team by sending a link to this page to support@adafruit.com, and we'll settle up with them through their account with us.
