arduino IDE trouble

by Rcayot on Wed Feb 12, 2020 1:18 pm

I am trying to get my Metro M4 Express working. I did the install, and chose my board, only in the board manager there is no "Metro M4 Express" listed, only "Adafruit Metro M4", which I selected, I doubt that is my problem. When I try to run blink, I get teh following messages:

Arduino: 1.8.11 (Linux), Board: "Adafruit Metro M4 (SAMD51), Enabled, 120 MHz (standard), Small (-Os) (standard), 50 MHz (standard), Arduino, Off"

fork/exec /bin/arm-none-eabi-g++: no such file or directory
Error compiling for board Adafruit Metro M4 (SAMD51).
Invalid library found in /home/pi/.arduino15/packages/adafruit/hardware/samd/1.5.10/libraries/CI_Tests: no headers files (.h) found in /home/pi/.arduino15/packages/adafruit/hardware/samd/1.5.10/libraries/CI_Tests
Invalid library found in /home/pi/.arduino15/packages/adafruit/hardware/samd/1.5.10/libraries/CI_Tests: no headers files (.h) found in /home/pi/.arduino15/packages/adafruit/hardware/samd/1.5.10/libraries/CI_Tests

This report would have more information with
"Show verbose output during compilation"
option enabled in File -> Preferences.

any help would be appreciated.

For the initial install, were you following this guide?
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-met ... md51/setup
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-met ... rduino-ide

Did you install both the Arduino and the Adafruit SAMD board packages?

Two things. First the install was done from "arduino" folder, after which there was another folder "Arduino" which was empty except for an empty "library" folder.

Second, the board was running UF2 bootloader as I was trying to use CP before I installed Arduino IDE.

And yes, I followed those instructions, which cannot find where to install SAMD51 twice.

Are you doing the Board Support install from within the Arduino IDE? It should take care of the correct folder location for you.

I missed the loading the Arduino SDA board support, so I went to renstall, and nothing. Rebooted, nothing. So I deleted everything and am now downloading the tar file again.

I will let you know how that goes.

okay, here is an update. Finally, after reinstalling everything, I started up Arduino IDE to find that my board (Metro Express) is already installed, and the Arduino AVR boards library is installed! I cvannot find the Arduino SAM support boards listed, and I do not see how to uninstall the AVR board.

So, here is latest error when running blink:

Arduino: 1.8.11 (Linux), Board: "Adafruit Metro M4 (SAMD51), Enabled, 120 MHz (standard), Small (-Os) (standard), 50 MHz (standard), TinyUSB, Off"

more.

I uninstalled, deleted everything. re-downloaded the IDE, un-tar'd it and ran install:

pi@raspberrypi:~/Downloads/arduino-1.8.12 $ sudo ./install.sh
Adding desktop shortcut, menu item and file associations for Arduino IDE...

touch: cannot touch '/root/.config/mimeapps.list': No such file or directory
/usr/bin/xdg-mime: 848: /usr/bin/xdg-mime: cannot create /root/.config/mimeapps.list.new: Directory nonexistent

done!

there was no desktop icon installed! okay, any insight will help. Going to uninstall, then reboot, then repeat.

Did you ever succeed?

I have the same basic problem. I've followed the instructions on the Metro M4 Express product pages: Arduino SAMD 1.8.5, Adafruit SAMD 1.5.12, which does NOT show the Metro M4 Express as included, After installing, there is no "Adafruit Metro M4 Express" option in the boards list in the IDE. There is a Metro M0 Express and a Metro M4 (not Express).

I have some com port errors as well, but those often clear with a restart of the PC.

You do *not* need to uninstall any existing Board Support Packages or ones that get installed with the base Arduino IDE.

If you add the URL to the Additional Boards Manager list:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-met ... md51/setup
and then install the Arduino SAMD BSP:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-met ... upport-6-5
and then also the Adafruit SAMD BSP:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-met ... t-samd-6-7
it should work.

When you go into the Boards Manager and try to search for those BSP's, are they not shown? Can you post screen capture of what you are seeing?

I think the confusion is because the Boards menu doesn't say "Express." Even on the "how to use" page ( https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-met ... rduino-ide ) where it says "Metro M4 Express" is added, the picture shows just "Metro M4." The product page ( https://www.adafruit.com/product/3382 ) also names a "Metro M4" while showing a photo that clearly says "Metro M4 Express."

So "Metro M4" IS the same as "Metro M4 Express." (and there's also the "M4 Express Airlift Lite")
