Metro Mini cannot upload. DOA ?

by LostChain on Thu Oct 14, 2021 11:21 pm

Hello,

on 10/3/2021 I purchased 4 Adafruit Metro Mini 328 - 5V https://www.adafruit.com/product/2590 among other things, via order # 2671195

2 of the 4 do not appear to function properly when powered up. I tested them straight out of the bags, no soldering or any changes to the boards at all.

It was my understanding that these come tested and loaded with the Blink sketch from the factory. The 2 non-functional units do not blink their "L" LED when powered via the micro-usb port, they simply illuminate the green "ON" LED. Attempting to upload the Blink sketch results in the following errors from the IDE:

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
An error occurred while uploading the sketch
avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: stk500_getsync() attempt 1 of 10: not in sync: resp=0xee

avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: stk500_getsync() attempt 10 of 10: not in sync: resp=0xee

The boards are both recognized immediately by windows as "Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COMxx)"

Not sure what else to try as the other two boards on this purchase work fine right out of the bag, blink and accept sketches.
I was told by support to post my issue here so I hope someone can help out.

Thanks!!

The 2 non-functional units do not blink their "L" LED when powered via the micro-usb port

Does the LED do anything if your power and then press the RST (reset) button?

Can also test this on the 2 that appear to be working for comparison.

Thanks so much for getting back to me.
There is no reaction on the LED when I press the reset button on either unit.
On the other two working units, in reaction to pressing the RST button I get 2 rapid pulses of the LED and then it begins the slow pulses of the Blink sketch.
On initial powerup of the working units, there is a flurry of activity on the LED, before settling in to the Blink sketch. In contrast, the two problem children never blink that LED no matter what I do.

Thanks for the check. Something is up with those two, let's replace them.

You can reply back in your email to support@adafruit.com and this time link them to this thread. They can send you two replacement Metro Mini's.
