Whenever I drop (or copy/paste) the UF2 file downloaded from the makecode site into CPLAYBOOT, the file loads, the board is ejected, and the same thing happens every time. No matter if I use a different browser, try a simple file (compiled blink sketch), or any number of combinations I get the same result (see picture) Blue and red lights, with 0 interactivity.

So I figured out how to get to work, but it requires me to unplug the board from usb power, and plug in battery power for the sketch to run on the board...is this correct? shouldn't it also run when plugged in? am I using the wrong type of cable? the cable seems to work in all other instances so...

It should work OK with USB power. Can you share your MakeCode project and put the link here.

That worked OK for me while still attached to the computer via USB cable. I went to your link, clicked edit so I could open it. Then clicked download and saved the UF2 to my computer. Then put the CPX in bootloader mode and copied UF2 to CPLAYBOOT. It ejected and was dark. But I can press the buttons and get the NeoPixels to light up and if I shake it more NeoPixels.

When you are in bootloader mode, what are the contents of the INFO_UF2.TXT file in the CPLAYBOOT folder?

What version of MakeCode are you running? (Gear icon -> About...)

I'm using the same version of makecode that you posted a photo of in your reply.

It looks like you did the bootloader update from here?
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-cir ... bootloader

What operating system are you using?

I believe I did update the bootloader from that page. I'm using MacOS Mojave 10.14.4.

I wonder if you're still running into some of the quirks related to that same issue with MacOS 10.14.4. The bootloader update should have fixed it. And you have done that based on the info in your INFO_UF2.TXT file. But maybe it is still lingering for some reason.

It's not totally dead, right? It can take a new program. But you have to switch to battery power to actually have the program run?

Correct. But only for Makecode. When uploading files from the Arduino IDE or utilizing Circuitpython, the code runs immediately after uploading over USB.

Really odd behavior. Do you have access to another computer you could use to test the MakeCode behavior?
